12-step groups

Posted by paxvox59 on November 4, 2008, at 17:17:13

Hey Ya'll! I was wondering how many folks still try to go to NA or AA meetings and if you tend to feel comfortable at such things. I have found quite a few folks who could easily post on sites such as this. Many say that addiction is really just a form of mental illness, and I think I can agree with that. Secondly, I know that a lot of drugs exaccerbate our underlying illnesses and bring out psychosis. Certainly did for me on caine!

Ive attended 12 step groups for many years for both drugs and alcohol.(NA and AA) im not rying to put you off but the problem being is that you have an illess, and an illness that can never be cured. To an extent they have a point but the devil is in the detail so to speak. Your addictions stem from underlying emotional problems probably stemming from childhood or some undelying emotional truama that you cannot resolve or identify. I found that the more I looked back at my upbringing the more i realised that I was wounded so to speak as a child and I did not have the capacity to untangle the emotional garbage that i was left with. I.e Rejection, loneliness, parental influence, family break-up etc etc. I find the most effective way of understanding myself is to pray for healing and pray often. It may sound naff but I have found a lot of healing and peace.

AA was never for me. I attended a couple of meetings and it just didn't do anything for me. After the last meeting, I went to the bar directly next door. Who the heck started an AA meeting next to a bar, that was a bad idea. Anyways, I've been drinking and sometimes using drugs for about 10 years now. I did something sooooo horrible last week that triggered me to stop drinking and using 100%. I've said it 100 times before, but I will say it 101 times. I've had enough and I quit! I don't need AA. Hearing other people's experiences will not make me want to quit. I don't believe in that whole higher power stuff. I don't want to inconvience myself and have to drive to meetings all the time. I am just speaking for myself but all I need to do is keep myself busy, and stay away from my "friends" who party. My father and aunt really want me to join AA but I just don't want to....... Maybe it works for some but sure won't work for me.

I guess what I glean from the meetings (besides the socialization aspect) is a feeling of understanding. True, addiction is just a sub-set of mental illness, but it's more complicated than that. I suppose I could receive the same level of "support" from a mental health discussion group (as in PB) but those are hard to find outside of in large cities.
