Hi All,
I proposed my diss in late 2005, after working and doing pilot research since late 2004.My project consists of two studies. One of the studies includes video data. tons and tons of it.
today I finished entering the data from analysing 9000 hours of videotape data. NINE THOUSAND! okay, I had a research assistant help me out one summer, but still! most of the work is my own. This part was the most GOD-AWFUL terrible depressing part of my graduate school career. The hardest part of this particular study is over.
Thank you for letting me toot my horn. I can't really tell my parents. Usually I'd go out with the girlfriends and get drunk, but I'm on way too many meds for that. Husband's out of town.
and so on and so forth.

p.s. I did this by working in 2 hour stretches for a couple of days in a row. Lots of the videos could be fast-forwarded. some bits had to be rewound and played in frame by frame agony...AGONY.

In the midst of a lot of work and personal and psychological and psychopharmocological stress, I will remember these words that my diss advisor said to me yesterday:
"Linden, you must feel really good about these data"
and then I mumbled a bit about how there's still so much work to do, blah blah...
but it was nice to hear her say that.
Sherry will have to be a tiny sip. Thanks for thinking of me :)

AWESOME!! I am still in the prelim stage and in big trouble with my committee, but it's awesome to see that someone is gettime some major work done! CHEERS!
I know the videotranscribing was hellish, but you did it - quite impressive @ 9000hours of video. I can predict that you MUST be over the hump with handling the data. Good luck on the writing!!!
I'll try to do 2-hour writing intervals, maybe that'll help this process. I am drained to death!

I think your goal of writing in 2-hour chunks sounds like a great idea. I need to get my sh*t together, personally. Actually, this am I was really thinking kind of long term about the dissertation, and I realized that I have not so much time.
I have two studies- one is observational (the 9000 hours of videotape) and the other is experimental.
Well, I have to collect data from a few more cases for the experiment, but I already have 65 cases. Each of these has to be analysed and coded, which takes about 30 minutes for each case. Okay...so that works out to ... about 30 hours of work. hard work. So, my plans for the rest of the quarter is to
1) perform the analyses for the observational study, and present at lab meeting in December.
2) finish collecting the last few cases for the experimental study and do 20 hours of coding for the experimental study every week. (that's 3 hours a day, 7 days a week, or 4 hours a day 5 days a week.
Sekou- how'd you get in trouble with your committee? Will you be able to get back in their good graces?
Okay, well I had better skedaddle. I'm going to clean up my place and restock my cupboards today so that I will ave some positive energy and neatness in my place to get some WORK done this afternoon.
best wishes- keep me posted!
