I am so scared I won't be able to go back!

Posted by deuce224 on June 19, 2006, at 21:05:07

I have been out of school for over a year since I graduated with my bachelors degree. In that time I have had a break down and gone into a year long depression. I have tried tons of different AD's and now I am trying lithium. I am supposed to start grad school august 25th, but I am so afraid that I will not be able to do it, not like this atleast. Part of me thinks that the only way to get better is to jump back into life, but like I said I am just so afraid. I just had to say it. Maybe someone out there is in a similar situation.

OK, not the same situation, but at least I'm also in the "I don't know if I can do this" boat with you. (Here's a bucket -- start bailing.)

Would you like my patented lecture? Probably not, so I'll just offer some random thoughts, instead. Like, what would you do if you DON'T go to grad school this year? Can you start in the spring? Or is it one of those formal programs where you have to do things on their timetable? If you can start in spring, I'd say put it off until then, and use the fall term to try a class at a jr college -- they're cheap -- just to see how you feel about being in school again? See if you can do it? Take something totally foreign to you, something that interests you, and go from there.

Or not.

Also, go in and ask an advisor about accommodations based on your current condition. Not, "I'm depressed so I want a free ride," but more along the lines of, "How can we set this up so that I can drop out for this term if I can't handle it right now, but not have it destroy my academic standing for all time?"

That's actually all i can suggest today, because I am not particularly smart today. Just crying too hard to think, you know?

Good luck, whatever happens.
