Deciding what to take next...

Posted by Racer on May 9, 2006, at 21:00:51

I'm of two minds about this -- well, OK, it's more like ten minds, but there are really only two choices I'm writing about here right now...

This summer, I have signed up for another math class, and was looking for another class to take. The summer sessions are six weeks, so intense stuff, but the two classes I'm thinking of do not overlap with one another.

The class I'm not sure about is a Psych class, and I'd be taking if for no apparent reason, and I would be missing several sessions while I'm out of town. The instructor told me that missing classes would not be a problem for me.

{sigh} I don't know. I don't even know if I'm that interested in the topic, but I feel the "need" to take an additional class this summer. Partly my usual insanity, but also because it keeps the momentum going, if that makes sense? Even if the class in question has no real relevance for me....

Anyone here have any questions that might help me clarify this one? Thanks.

Looks like I'm responding to lots of your posts today. :)

The big question for me would be: what other responsibilities do you have this summer? Will taking the extra class cut into your ability to do the other things that you need to? I think that your thought abt momentum makes sense.

What is your ultimate career goal? (Sorry if I should know this) Also, what is the topic of the psych class? Is it 101 or something more specific?

Best,
EE

And I always like it when you do. :-)

About the only responsibility I have this summer, besides taking the math class I've registered for, is to travel for a week to visit a good friend. Which actually happens during I think it's the second week of this class... The instructor said it wouldn't be a problem, though, to miss that many classes. Otherwise, there's nothing out of the ordinary. I'll be getting overwhelmed with housework, etc, as usual, and probably getting depressed and hopeless, but I can do that in my sleep. I don't think it should take much of my time.

Ultimate goal? None. My current educational goal is to avoid making any plans, because that's been such a disaster for me in the past. This time around, I am resolutely NOT choosing what I'm working towards.

Right now, instead, I am taking some math classes that are prerequisites to taking chemistry. I want to take chemistry, because I want to. No other reason. And since I know that I do better with two classes, rather than one, I am taking another class every term, and choosing those based on what sounds interesting when I register. This summer, it will be Human Growth and Development; in the fall, it's Physiological Psychology. I also plan to take Physical Anthro, especially since this school has a lab class to go with it; and I think I'll be taking some more bio classes along the way. Sociology sounds interesting, as does abnormal psychology. I'll take some of those.

In theory, I would like to finish the degree I started back in 1983. (I'd been out of school a while when I started that, by the way...) If I make that a real goal, though, that I'm working towards, it puts too much stress on me. That leads to breakdowns, and fear of trying again. That's why I'm trying so hard just to make this about the class I'm taking now. Which is very, very hard for me.

So, there's no reason for you to know my ultimate goal, since I'm working very hard to keep myself from seeing one, too.

Thank you for your response, here and on Eating.
