I am really nervous

Posted by MichaelJr on June 24, 2005, at 4:16:35

I am starting law school in August but I'm really nervous. It took me 5.5 years to graduate undergrad and I never really tried. My grades were never that good, I was dropping classes, etc. just plauged by chronic underachievement. I did pretty good on the lsat though so I am attending a respectable law school. I just don't want to drop out or get kicked out. if I am lazy like I was in undergrad, I won't last. I am hoping that I can turn it around. I am more motivated and mature than I was heading into undergrad, but I'm still nervous about it.

That is similar to me. During HS I didn't care at all and graduated with only a 3.0. Then I headed straight to college and did horrible the first two years because I still didn't care. Took a year off and began taking classes in my major. I did amazing in those (3.7 avg. for major), but still did bad in the other gen ed classes. Ended up graduating with under a 3.0 (thanks to those first couple years). Then took another two years off before starting grad school. I will be graduating in Aug. with a 3.5. So even if you had chronic underachievement before, you actually can turn it around. But you are very correct that if you don't change, law school will kill you and probably force you to drop out. It's like medical school...you have to live and breath the material to graduate. I sure wouldn't want a lawyer who didn't work hard in law school.

If you don't think you're ready, talk to the school about defering your admission for a year. I sure learned that taking a year off can make all the difference in the world for a student.

Michael, do you have a dx? If so, what is it? Do you see a p-doc? I'm just wondering if you might be ADD? Some of the stuff you mention is classic. Underachievement, lack of motivation, taking longer than others to achieve the same end, thinking you are lazy. If you think it's a possibility, check out www.addforums.com
and then see a p-doc who specializes in ADHD/ADD.

Just a thought,
Jazzy
