I need help

Posted by rainbowbrite on January 10, 2005, at 9:02:44

Lately I haven't been able to do any school work, it is pathetic. If i don't start doing something soon I will lose some courses. I don't know what to do (well i do...read!)I just can't get going. Any help/suggestions? I am going to start panicking soon.

There was a (brief) thread on this a while back. Here is a link.

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/studs/20040420/msgs/425562.html

I sympathise with you, I really do. I think everyone has been there before! I quite like gg's suggestion of telling yourself that you are going to read for 10 minutes and then you might find that once you are into it it isn't so hard to continue. You might even find it becomes interesting as you get into it.

I have little rituals that I do before I start work. I go to the bathroom, make myself a cup of coffee, have a cigarette then arrange stuff around me.

Some people might not like this (in the sense that it may not work for them) but when it comes to reading I say, read in bed! Whats the point of sitting at a desk (ugh) somewhere boring like the library when you could be much more comfortable sprawled out on a couch or enjoying the sun (if it is summer) or curled up in bed if it is cold.

I try to read stuff a couple of times (if I have the time). Once just reading it like you would a novel. Trying to understand and follow. Second time to make summary notes (BRIEF explanations of stuff or facts under each important section heading). Third time (if I can possibly manage it) trying to understand it again. You can make increasingly brief summary notes as well. That way it all comes flooding back with just the section headings (on cue cards or whatever).

Ok well, I am a bit OC and perfectionist when it comes to readings...

But yeah, plonk yourself somewhere comfortable for 10 minutes and see how you go.

I agree! i can't really even work at a desk im so conditioned to the bed. that is a good suggestion of gg's. thanks I will try that, i hope i don't give up after 10min :(. I have started staring at teh walls for fun, and at my dirty kitchen :) as i stare at teh walls and the pictures i am realizing how neat walls are! tehy are so cool, cooler than any text book. and you know they aren't all straight either, sortof slanted. OMG I better call my doctor, im going crazy...LOL...oh wait my wall just said soemthing. hehe
wish my luck im gonna try to do something useful rather than talk to my walls.

Good luck! Hey, I know that sometimes I even think of cleaning the toilet and scrubbing round the window sills with a toothbrush wnen I am procrasitinating.

Maybe I am a bit anal about reading (I just LOVE books) but unfortunately it is time for me to write now (just one more book - ok?).

I shall go write for 10 minutes...

Heh heh I just went to the Dr to get an antihistimene (?!) to stop this damn hayfever. Probably a good thing to have done but it was also a way of avoiding my 10 minutes...

ENOUGH ALREADY, TIME TO DO SOME WORK - OK?

Or what. ( Golly gee, here I am too :-) )

Don't forget to plan a REWARD for when you have done some.

Don't beat yourself up for how much you have left, reward yourself for having made a start (easier said than done I know...)

ENOUGH ALREADY!

YAY!

I am doing a Masters. This is my 9th year (OMG!) and I am in my 5th year of study...

Had 3 years off though, and one year part time. Also have an extension into this year as I have nothing better to do.

I am a philosopher. You??

Cool. I took some psychology.
I am into philosophy of psychology :-)
Sounds like you may need to try another 10 minutes.

Of course you have done GREAT already. Think you could finish off the chapter?

thank you, you really helped motivate me and I did it! I read a chapter. I am so proud of my self! I sound like a little kid but I just kicked butt for the last 1/2 hour. I have been in such a rut. It was a short chapter but still. Now just 10 more to go whaaaaa!

Philosophy of Psychology sounds cool. I started a philosphy course once but the prof was very intimidating so wimpy me dropped it. i think i am very philosophical though. I should probably try again.

Im going to try another chapter, baby steps, :) wish me luck.
did you get what you were working on finished?

Luck :-)
You are doing great!

> did you get what you were working on finished?

Oh hell no. It is the sort of thing that I aim to get maybe 1 or 2% done in a day :-)

Somewhere between 30 and 40 thousand words - but I don't have to finish until September. I have kind of written about half. Then I thought 'it is all crap' and wanted to toss it. So I started again yesterday. I think what I wrote was an improvement on what had gone before. And I can see that far from starting again I just need to cut and paste whole sections.

Then alter the tone from argumentative to discussing.

Thats hard for me...

But it allows me to be more honest about (what I perceive to be) the pro's and con's of what I am saying...

And a chatty style has gotta take up more words too... surely...

that sounds intense! I wouldn't toss it, definately try to salvage what youve got. 40000 words, OMG taht is really overwhelming!

I have a really hard time changing my writing style as well, I am opinionated what can i say.

Im trying to decide whether or not to go to class this morning....hmm...hmmm...hmmm....I probably should.

did you ever seriously think you wouldn't get as far as you have in school?

Nah, it isn't so bad. See ya break it down into chapters and then sections and write it in 2,000 - 3,000 word bits. Just think of it as a series of essays. At the moment I have lots of 'bits' but not much continuity or flow going on. So I am trying to write it again from the beginning and I kind of insert bits that I have already written when I come to them in a logical order. Some of the bits will end up being chucked. I am also writing a whole heap more of them as I go... Will be ok in the end :-)

> I probably should.

Yup. Even if it is boring and you fall asleep I think some of it gets in by osmosis :-)

> did you ever seriously think you wouldn't get as far as you have in school?

Yeah. Thought I'd never be able to go back after my break. Dr's told me to forget it. I was terrified of returning. But it was really important to me and I made it in the end. Still have a long way to go though. It is hard at times. But it is important to me so I will just do the best I can.

You are doing good. A bit at a time. Just a bit at a time. I think most people always feel behind. You can break everything you have to do up into sections, though. So if you do a section per day then you can study it all. Just a bit at a time. A little bit every day. You can do it. Me too :-)

Thank you, it really does help breaking things up. I have a tendency to look at the big picture and think OMG I can't do it. the way you describe breaking your work up gives me a sense of ease with mine....I can't really explain it.
