They moved my exam forward!!

Posted by cubic_me on January 7, 2005, at 13:46:09

I've just checked my exam timetable and they have moved my first exam to tuesday rather than thursday - aaaarrrrgh! I should be able to get everything done in time, but I was hoping to get it done properly. Nevermind.

By the way, if anyone here knows alot about semantic network models I'd be mightily grateful of some help.

Hey now, are they allowed to do that?
Over here no alterations may be made to assessments as per the course outline without the agreement of the whole class (well, thats the theory anyway). Though I guess the exam date isn't usually on the outline so maybe there is a bit of leeway there... I don't suppose the course conveners get much say with respect to when the exam is scheduled...

Can you expand on that a bit? E.g., name a model or two. I have looked at networks but don't know if you mean them in the sense I am thinking... Don't know if the ones I know count as 'semantic' network models or not...

Yep, I've just been having a look on the web and have found some useful info on Quillian's model, but I'm finding Shapiro, Hendrix and Schank quite difficult to get my head around. Do you know of any good resources?

Hmm. Shapiro and Schank are ringing bells... I would suggest checking out your library. Hey, you are not making work for yourself when you just need to learn ppt lecture notes and read the required text - are ya?

Just for my general interest... Does this have anything to do with the 'Sharks' and 'Jets' Model? Does that ring a bell? Maybe Newell & Simon but I'm not sure. Thats what I was thinking when you mentioned networks. Connectionist semantic networks of inhibitory and exitatory connections...

I've looked in the library, but all of the decent books and required texts have been taken out (yes I know - I should have looked earlier than 3 days before the exam!) I'm not doing any extra work, but reciting the lecture notes will just get me a bare pass and in the end I need more than that to make this year worthwhile.

I'm not sure. This is for the language section of the course, but alot of it is to do with memory. I really don't have a clue what I am doing - I'll just try to learn it by rote an recite it in the exam!

Is it multi-guess or essays?

When I was doing psych most of our stuff was multi-guess. I would learn the lecure notes (by rote) and read the text a couple of times. Sometimes I didn't really get the feeling that I UNDERSTOOD it terribly well. But understanding doesn't seem to be so much of a requirement when it is multi-guess.

I found that the material worked fairly much in a cumulative fashion anyway. You may find that the same stuff comes up next year.

Might be a little late to recall... People don't mind the fines so much when they have to cram for an exam anyway. Anything useful on desk copy?

This is an essay. The exam on tuesday is a seen exam (we have the paper) with 6 short essays and 1 long one in 2 hours. Then I have 2 unseen papers (one is the same format, another is 2 essays).

I haven't done an essay exam for 4 years, because in medicine it is all short answer questions or multiguess. I suppose that's why it's so daunting!

Ah, now it makes more sense to me. You kind of do need to understand a bit more to write an essay.... I used to get copies of past years exam papers (or in your case you already have some of the questions) and practice writing them. You can do that and kind of memorise it and there you go. But yes, I see that that requires a bit of research... But they often quite like summaries of what they said in class.

Yeah, I understand. Practicing writing them really helped me out there. Especially when you have some of the questions already.

Good luck!
