shot put

I feel bad about things I have said about Dame Valarie.

I was speaking from a position of ignorance. It is true. I would have admitted that at the time. I was not wedded to any of my opinions, I expressed them, as that.

The more I look into it...

Sigh. The trouble is that often, in these parts, you are not allowed to function at all, even less succeed, without the permission of.. All the various people you are supposed to acknowledge (else you will not be granted permission at all).

I mean to say...

Her transition from overt fat to muscled weight...

Her transition from chuck the put.. To styled technique...

These were things that happened as she was allowed more autonomy over the choices that she made.

As she was able to ditch a coach and move forwards... As she was allowed to invest in things she saw merit in (technique wise etc).

And that's a thing.

Really.

She is a motivation and inspiration to all the people (both men and women) of the world. For what she has accomplished and achieved. Because of various people who have helped her along the way. And also in spite of various people who were 'helping' who she needed to navigate.. . No shortage of them, in these parts...

something is (genuinely) a bit f'd up when it comes to women's weightclasses, in sport.

there was some australian weightlifter.. who was delegated to 'superheavy weight' of women's weightlifting.. from a background of success in 'power sports' like throwing...

she was saying that she did not feel like the aim of her game was to accumulate as much weight or mass about her core as she could develop in order to lift as much weight as possible.

she felt like she wanted or needed to rein in the weight accumulation and she functioned better with less weight about her core...

that is to say.. she felt there needed to be another weight class before they declared super heavy weight for women.

and if you looked at her.. compared to the men of the super heavy class.. she did not look like a female version of them. with respect to the amount of fat that her core could carry. It looked like she was packing muscular weight still and could have grown more muscle maybe even to fill a weight class...

anyway...

apparently there is still 'fat shaming' and 'weight shaming' that happens to women in womens sport (does not happen to men in mens sport). so... we are not there yet...

I guess I feel about it, especially, because Maaori and Pacifica people often have denser bones and carry more weight about their frames. Partly because of poverty and the sorts of food choices that go along with that... But partly because they seem to be (on average) built a bit larger and denser. The way that african americans seem sometimes (but not always, to be sure) to be. And, I suppose, to be fair, other people of other races, too, so maybe it isn't about race, specifically or particularly. Maybe all races will have their heavy-weight athletes and their super heavy weight athletes.

The thing is... It is a way for people to be.

Sometimes people get into their heads that the idea or ideal of 'health' or of 'fitness' is.. Anorexia, even. But, definitely, slim. I do understand about the move to consume less animal meat and dairy protein. For Environmental also personal health reasons. Sure. Yes. Balance in all things.

But chickpeas and plant based proteins... And we return to this issue of weight.. Density.. Of the human frame. For health and for fitness.

And the idea/l of.. Starving or.. Reducing your calorie intake and upping your exercise.. The intention of reducing your overall body weight. To end up with a slimmer and lighter...

And then..

Another idea/l of.. Growing into your frame. Of replacing the fat with muscle. Which is just to say, of worrying less about restricting your food and worrrying more about increasing the workload. Building the metabolically active muscle.

And of course balance.

But women, particularly..

And I guess you add to that the idea of investment (if it is allowed). So you can devote your time and energy and attention to things like core strength. Year after year after year... The pay off being much much much much much longer term.

We aren't there yet.

It's great to see how weightlifint in NZ has developed. But we aren't there, yet, where people can focus on the longer term things. People need to demonstrate numbers early on else they won' tbe supported or funed long term. People with the capacity to see the input that went into things like core strength... Aren't making the decisons..
