Was I sexually assaulted today?

Posted by Deneb on April 5, 2011, at 22:55:54

I was waiting for the bus downtown with only one other woman. This black guy with dreadlocks was staring at me and he had his penis out and was masturbating close to me. I ignored him until some more people came to the bus stop and he walked away. Then I called the police.

I was too afraid to call the police while he was still there. I also thought of taking a picture of him with my cellphone, but I wasn't sure if I could control the flash and I didn't want to risk being caught.

I'm OK, not traumatized or anything. It's not like I've never seen a penis. I sure hope that guy gets caught though. Man, there are a lot of creeps in Ottawa. This is the second time something like this has happened to me!

Well I'm glad for you that you didn't feel particularly traumatized by it.

It made me wonder what's the 'best' response to such a thing. I found a recommendation to *avoid* expressing shock, fear, terror, or disgust (since that's likely to encourage them), calmly go about your business, distance yourself from the offender, and report it to the police ASAP. That's pretty much just what you did, except I guess you might have walked away from him. So your instincts were really good there.

When I lived in NYC this was a regular experience on the subway, like at least once a week. Call the NYPD? Yeah, right

Apparently in Japan, it is common for men to rub up against women in the subway for their own gratification. It's called frotteurism. I can't imagine being so shameless.

Oh yucky :-<

Glad you are alight.

I'm with Tabitha. And I guess I might walk away if no one else was there.

It's been awhile since I lived in a city and needed to endure malarkey like that to the point of feigned nonchalance.

Then again, I might get p*ssed if such hyjinks interfered with my schedule....

The police contacted me. There have been more reports of this guy masturbating in public. I hope they catch him. I wonder if I'll have to testify in court if they find him and he doesn't confesses?

Deneb, did they ask you to I.D. him? Do what you are comfortable with. You don't have to comply. Only if you want to. Any problems, call a local advocate for advice.

It's probably a misdemeanor offense and won't involve a trial. If they have multiple reports, then they must have identified it as one guy and have other women willing to give some sort of deposition. But I'm not a lawyer, especially not in Canada, so I'm just speculating.
