I and everyone else who works at my work are being laid off. They are closing the call centre. They just announced it today and they send us all home early with pay.
I already cancelled my membership at the Y, since the reason why I joined was because it is close to my work.
I have to start looking for a job now, the centre closes on June 10th.
I am wondering whether or not I should still go to SF because it will be very expensive and I am afraid I won't be able to find another job.
I want to see Dr. Bob again. :-(
This sucks.
My meds are covered by insurance 100% now through my work, but soon I won't have it anymore.
Are there any programs out there in Ontario that helps pay for meds? My meds are really expensive, like $150 per month.
Maybe I'll try to get a job for the summer only and go back to school full time and finally get my degree.

I'm pretty sure my plane tickets are non-refundable because they are the cheapest ones from Air Canada.
If I cancel my flight I will get credit for a future trip, but the catch is that the trip must be made within a year and any unused amounts are forfeited.
I guess I am still going to SF then! Yay, I get to see Dr. Bob again!
I hate looking for a job.
I hope I can get unemployment insurance if I can't find a job.

>Hey Deneb:
Sorry you got laid off work. :( I know the anxiety that can bring. But I can offer a few points that should help you. For your prescription drugs here in Ontario, go here:
http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/drugs/trillium.htmlIt is the Ontario Drug Trillium Program. It'll cover most of your med cost. Read it over and when you get to the bottom it has an application you can download. Send it in asap, and it may take a bit of time, but I got lucky and went through fast. Read up all about it. You don't have to do anything except show your health card once at the pharmacy, pay a small deductible each year, and all your meds are covered by them.
Need any help, please ask.
Best,
Jay

I am still going to SF. I can't get my money back for the plane tickets, only credit for a future flight within a year. I don't think I can use up that much money for plane tickets within that time, so I will just go. It is already paid for. I just have to pay for hotel basically.
Yay, I get to see Dr. Bob!
My Mom said I can get unemployment insurance. I wonder if I can get that while going to school full time?

sorry to hear your job is disappearing
in the US you probably can't officially go to school full time and collect unemployment--
but Canada might let you
i would suggest going forward with it w/o asking permissionwhat types of meds do you take?

The answer is no. Instead, you can defer your eligibility until after you leave school. You'll have to talk to the feds about how to do that. The process may have changed since I did it.

Hi Deneb,
So VERY sorry about this. What an upsetting & totally stressful thing to happen.
Have to go out, so can't read thread.
If you google 'free meds' after clicking the Canada option, you'll probably find something.
love, Kath

I'm sorry Deneb,
I wish that I could say with confidence that this will be the last post from someone losing their job. I suggest that you utlilize this break to look inside yourself and find out what you really want out of life and go for it. Sometimes life has a way of pushing us out there for that very purpose. I can't do anything to ease the pain right now---but, after many years on this planet, some of the best things that have happened to me--turned out to be some of the worst things. And on a positive note----some of the worst things that have ever happened to me---have turned out to be the very best things. I'm wishing like crazy that this is the latter.

Thanks, I think I am OK with this for the most part. I know I don't want to work there forever. Getting my degree will be a good thing.
My pdoc said she was going to try reducing my meds this summer after the trip to SF, but now who knows. We have to wait for a really stable period in my life to do it.
I take Celexa, Prozac, Risperdal and propranolol as needed.

Thanks for the info.
I think I will try to find a summer job because I will probably make more money working than getting unemployment insurance. I am not very good at looking for jobs though. I think I will get help from the unemployment place. I haven't looked for a job in a really long time, this sucks. I couldn't find a job before so I just went back to the call centre. It was really easy to get the job at the call centre.
I think what I will do is work until my last day then get unemployment insurance and look for a job at the same time. Then when fall comes, I'll quit my summer job or stop unemployment insurance and just go to school.
I have to be frugal with my money now. No more excessive spending.
I will ask the unemployment place if there is a way for me to go to school and still get some support.

"in the US you probably can't officially go to school full time and collect unemployment--
>
> but Canada might let you
> i would suggest going forward with it w/o asking permission"Deneb, before you make a decision, pull up the unemployment regs online. I don't know about Canada, but for those in the U.S. who read this statement, if you read the regs, you can find the loopholes. There are loopholes in almost all regulations, though they are invisible-you can create them.
I think for the U.S. states have different laws or guidlines, not sure. BUT-to collect unemployment generally, in the U.S., you have to be "available for work", and you don't have to accept a job that is unreasonable--lower pay than you were making before or too far from home, etc.
I collected unemployment in the U.S. while I went to college; in fact, I quit my job, went to a hearing against my former employer who brought their attorney, and won the case because of a weird loophole in a reg that I found and capitalized upon.
You can be "ready and available" for work while in school because if you find a job while you are in college, you can INTEND to 1) take a leave of absence from school to start working; 2) intend to rearrange your schedule in the evening/ weekends if you get a job or if college schedule doesn't have evening classes, you can intend to transfer to a different school. You could also apply for a few jobs here and there and not get them while you continue your studies. You could also be looking for and apply for only jobs with an evening shift if you attend classes in the daytime.
Please don't think its not possible to collect unemployment while in school. Instead, take advantage of loopholes in regs. The very wealthy do, trust me on this. I once worked for people who lived in a $3 million home, had a yaught, etc., but paid less taxes than me, and I'm familiar with all the tax deductions those who earn a lot of money can take.
Years ago, I'd feel guilty using public funds, but now-hell no. Do not feel bad!! We need educated people here in North America! Only 25% of the U.S. population has a college degree, not sure about Canada. Using public funds to become a more productive citizen serves the utility of your country and is not a bad thing.
Good luck in whatever you do!

Thanks for the tips.
I think I will apply for EI after I lose my job. I'm going to ask about going to school part time. I'm definitely not going to hide anything from them.
Does anyone know how many hours I can go to school and still collect EI in Canada?
This is the end of the thread.
