I was just wondering what could happen if people find out that you have a mental illness and/or are taking meds for it...aside from the judging or whatever.
One thing I was worried about was if I want to adopt in the future.
What else could be affected?
Maybe I'm just paranoid...but I don't think so

As everyone knows I cross dress, I made my mind up years ago to let everyone know what I do, I thought in mind that its better coming from me rather than from some else.I`d rather call myself a Unisex dresser, but society has this thing about who wheres what.
So what I am saying is,OK your on medication (that dose`nt mean your mental, its societys way of classing people)just like me with the dressing.
I`ve been put on medication since Slinky`s death,
but that dose`nt make me mental,I have a condition that is being dealt with, the fact that I went to my GP about myself shows that I of sound mind, and the same goes with you,so don`t put youself down, and don`t let others either.
As for not letting others know, thats your choice, but if you did choose to let others know, its how you go about it.
What ever you choose is up to you, but remember telling others in the right way, means you`ve been honest with them and to your self, but if others found out about your condition from someone else,
them people tend to think, why was`nt I told, what was she trying to hide. Also by letting others know means that there are more people willing to help, so you don`t have to be on your own.I hope this has been of some comfort and help.

> Maybe I'm just paranoid...but I don't think soHi, I don't have a clue whether or not a question could be asked about your meds on an adoption application. You might have a drug screen, but it would only be for illegal drugs. If you tell the lab technician, up front, that you are on Pmeds, they can't tell that to the adoption agency. That is confidential. I work in a prison and I told the lab that I take lamictal, blah, blah and she said that the screen is only for illegal drugs and the Pmeds wouldn't be disclosed.
I am not sure about an agency but it doesn't make sense to me that it would be an issue.
I am very careful about letting my employer know at my workplace. I work in a prison and all of the people there blame every disturbance on "bipolar"......I really want to step up in their faces and yell "I AM BIPOLAR!" and it doesn't affect my work.
Good luck! Pat

...People will want to compare THEIR meds and doses with yours. :) I think we are now down to about the 1 in 3 ratio, soon to be 1 : 2...and eventually 1 : 1. People try to put up BIG fronts to cover up any type of 'mental illness', and the ones who really put up the mask are usually the ones who are quite ill.Jay

i can't keep a secret, so don't tell me ANYTHING!!
i prefer to think of it as a 'wonderful personality trait' at times, and others, a horrible personality flaw. (yeah, bipolar disorder)
but, it shouldn't stop you from anyuthing. maybe becoming president, if you're like me and don't always take your medicine.
best of luck to you. and if you do run for president and get the nom, will you make me your vice? pretty please? i'll make friday 'no panties friday!!!!'
tata!

Hi no_rose_garden. I'm Karen. We're going through the adoption process right now. It's a little tricky at first with the meds and my history but completely do-able. I was beyond worried, and it all worked out fine. I won't go on and on unless you want me to...otherwise feel free to babblemail me

There is a good chance either your Mom or Dad, or maybe both, have at least SOME kind of mental health issue. Even if they are not in treatment, or have never said anything. (And I mean that with respect...that is just what the odds are..)Jay

yeah, Jay...i suspect you're right...which is part of why I wouldn't want them to know - I don't want them to have to worry - I don't know how they'd handle it.

Depends where you want to adopt from. I recently read that China had a whole bunch of new rules for overseas adoptions, no one on antidepressants, no one who is obese, no one over a certain age (can't remember what it was), no gay parents, possibly even no single parents, can't remember if that was the case. Probably most American agencies would be more subtle about their discrimination, but I'm sure it still exists. Cecilia
