The 'I Survived Christmas!' Thread

Posted by Racer on December 29, 2007, at 20:18:06

Since holidays are stressful for many people, I thought I'd start an "I survived Christmas" thread, which everyone is invited to post to. Please feel free to post about anything that went into surviving, since that's what this thread is about. No worries if you survived solely through hiding in the closet -- just tell us about anything interesting you found there...

In my case, I survived a very small gathering. My husband and I went to my mother's, and my aunt came over for a while, too. Auntie was visiting at her son's house, and we "missed" seeing them -- that is, we didn't see them this year. It's polite to say that we missed seeing them. After my aunt left, it was just the three of us, we had dinner, and dessert, and watched Jeopardy.

For Christmas, I knit a sweater for my mother. The yarn I ordered for it only arrived the Tuesday night before the holiday, so less than a week to knit a full sized, long sleeved cardigan with pockets. NOT enough time! I tried quite valiantly, but didn't quite finish it in time. The front bands were the only part unfinished, though, so Mom could try it on. It fit nicely. Although my mother is always withholding of praise for me, she came close to complimenting it -- "I needed a warm sweater to wear, and those are colors that I wear. Oh, and it has pockets -- pockets are a necessity, since old ladies put tissues in them." That, of course, led my husband to picture a long line of old ladies walking up to my mother to put tissues in her pockets, which was a funny image. While it would have been nice to have a little enthusiasm from my mother, this was the closest she's ever come to praising what I made for her. I guess I'll count that as a "win."

My husband was not terribly surprised by my gift to him, which was a disappointment -- I'd hoped for a little more surprise and reaction to it. Still he likes it, which is what really matters. (And I told him we can exchange it, if he likes another better.)

My aunt gave me a beautiful little drop spindle, which you can see here: http://www.dropspindle.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=122 It's the model called "Tsunami," in purpleheart. Just a lovely little thing, but I haven't tried it out yet -- still trying to get other things done, since I did NOTHING except knit for a week...

That's my Christmas. How about anyone else?

Had an absolutely wonderful Christmas except the smallest grandbaby took 3 days of visiting before she decided it was safe to sit in my lap with daddy right besides her!

Other than that I'm just tired. A happy tired, but tired.

Well, sorry for you all who had a bad time. My precious moments where spent at my sister and her hubby's new sprawling "mini" mansion. I got to be with every member of my whole family, and it was ALL full of love, happiness, laughter, silliness, ridiculous photos of me looking like a big bloated turkey with my two gals at my side...my beautiful sister and my sweet beautiful 23 year old niece. It's all up on facebook..heh.

I consumed much fine red wine, played 'Guitar Hero 2' with the kids. I got my sis and her hubby Bon Jovi tickets for (I think) March in Toronto, because my sis loves Jon. (Hey, she is 48 and looks 30...she deserves it..haha..lol..:-) My two nephews, aged 19 and 21, the 21 year old moving back out west to work on the oil patches in January. I challenged him to a few drinking games...and yes he beat me!. The only depressing part was leaving. I truly am blessed with an amazing family. No wonder I never wanted to 'grow up'!..lol

Only one shouting match between my brother and I, so for the most part peace reigned.

Thanks for starting this thread!

Is the spindle a part of a spinning wheel? At first, I thought it was a beautiful little toy that you set to spinning on the floor!

I have been fighting of some virus & also depression since Friday, so haven't much energy.

The nicest thing about my Christmas, I think, (apart from getting the most long, flowing, cozy flannelette nightgown & cozy housecoat)....

My son was at our house Christmas Eve & part of Christmas Day, but as his friend & friend's sister were on their own (Mom had gone away with BF until in the New Year) & they didn't have much food left, as they'd had numerous friends over & the food had dwindled. Anyway, my son had received a 'food box' from the Lions Club & it included a fairly big frozen turkey. He decided on Christmas Eve day, to take the turkey & some other food over to his friend's & to go there on Christmas Day to cook & join his friends for Christmas dinner. As it turned out, the sister went to friends, so my son's friend would have been all alone. It was the first time he'd cooked a turkey & it turned out delicious. I was so proud of him & so pleased at his kindness & thoughtfulness & sensitivity! That was a really nice thing to happen.

Hugs to all, luv, Kath

I don't know what that spindle thing is either, but it sure is pretty! I mean, seriously, I'd totally hang that on my wall!

As far as surviving Christmas... well, first off I had to tell my sister I couldn't spend the night on Xmas Eve because I didn't want to leave my cat alone. I have spent Xmas with them ever since my nephew was born (he's 9). I always get his Santa Claus presents because they don't have much money, so I like to be there to see him open them all. I knew my nephew would understand why I couldn't spend the night, but my sister still tried to give me a guilt trip about how disappointed he would be anyway. I told her I would come over the day before Xmas Eve and give him his presents from me, and we could sneak the others in, then I would come back xmas morning. She finally accepted that.

So the day came and I woke up throwing up. I kept trying to get ready to go, but in the end I just couldn't do it. I called my sister to tell her and said I'd try to come the next day (xmas eve). Of course her reaction was, "C___'s going to be so disappointed! He's been waiting on you!" I tried to say I was too busy trying not to throw up on the phone to think about all that and she said, "What are we supposed to do if you don't show up tomorrow?! C___ won't have a Christmas!" I again said I was too sick to think right then and I would call her the following day. She said, in a snotty voice, "How'd you get so sick all of a sudden anyway???" I finally just yelled, "Just tell him I'll be there tomorrow!"

So I drove over the next day (1 hour each way BTW) with my little puke bag beside me in the car, and managed not to throw up until I got home later. My nephew was really sweet about my kitty and about his presents. I told him I'd come over the next morning and see all his presents from Santa.

Xmas day went very well, I went to my sister's and looked at all C___'s toys, then I took everyone to my mom's for dinner (they don't have a car). That actually went well too! First time a gathering of all of us has gone well in a lo-n-ng time.

Everything went well until New Yr's Eve when I got sick AGAIN! Today's actually the first day I've felt completely well.

So that's my sorry tale. Actually, sickness aside, it wasn't too bad. I love seeing my nephew and how excited he is about it all. I taught him to play Clue, which went a long way in keeping the peace at my mom's (everyone usually fights, which causes him to act up, which causes everyone to fight about him acting up and what to do about it). But I guess the main thing is, I survived!!! And I'm not throwing up anymore! And Kitty is happy and bouncing around everywhere like a psycho kitty! And I'm not throwing up anymore! Yea!!!!

Jeez - stress city that turned out well, sounds like.

Glad you got better; sorry you got ill again...hope you get & stay well. There's been a lot of illness around. Phillipa, moi & you for starters...can't remember if others said they were ill also. My memory isn't my strong point.

hugs, Kath

PS - I LOVE CLUE!! we get VERY dramatic when we're playig....use voices appropriate to our character etc. Say things like "I STRONGLY suspect the Mrs. White committed this heinouse crime viciously, with the candlestick in the far corner of the billiards room." etc.

:-)

I did one of those things where I appreciated your post, laughed at the last part, and then never actually RESPONDED! We need to come up with a term for that... "Babble amnesia", "Babble fax paus", "Babble blunder". Hmmm, I'll have to think on that one.

Your way of playing Clue sounds FUN! I'll have to try it next time.

Yeah - it's a scream! My daughter & I particularly love to be extREMEly dramatic & our whole family loves words, so we get very wordy, sometimes saying a few sentences...say it was, I think it's Colonel Mustard, he might say, with a British accent:

"Ahem! I say! The clues remind me of an occassion when I was stationed in Indya. The particulars evade me at the moment, but I DO strongly suspect that....." etc. LOL

It's great fun!

Tell me if you try it!

hugs, Kath
