I can't even watch a rated G movie

Posted by llrrrpp on June 4, 2006, at 16:29:40

I'm so pathetic!
I'm trying to watch Wallace and Gromit, Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and everything is so dark, with spooky music, and suspense, and everything is triggering me! Part of me is very very disturbed, and part of me is laughing at myself. I have had to take 3 breaks from the TV to do something else. Seriously, my heart is pounding. Anxiety. wtf?

Who is scared of a were-rabbit? ME. yes. ME. this is the person who saw her first Stephen King movie at age 8, in the theater (thanks, Dad - another great example of your parenting skills - how to have a nice family night at the movies!) and now I'm such a wreck that I can't even watch a movie rated G. what a loser.

G rated are the worst. I'd rather watch Halloween or Alien than Bambi or 101 Dalmations.

What we do to our kids!

Strange but I find myself getting anxious when watching TV. What's up with that? It's supposed to be relaxing? Love Phillipa

Yeah, but Law and Order and Crossing Jordan is just fine. (Those are homicidal crime dramas, for my international readers)

Maybe the reason why the G movie gets to me is because it arouses a very primitive fear. the most basic fear, the kind of fear that a 6 year old has.

I think you have something there.

Bambi is the scariest movie I ever saw. Losing one's mother is certainly a primitive fear.

or maybe it brings up other old feelings you may have had when you were 6. 'remembering the child'

sorry you're getting so much anxiety.

OMgoodness, Dinah! Me, too! I've never been able to watch it again. The whole forest fire thing and then......{shudder}.....I can't take that. There are others, too. The dinosaur one....with Littlefoot....I've forgotten the name but my daughter still has her stuffed Littlefoot from years back....yet they all pale in comparison to what Bambi did to me.

The Land That Time Forgot? No, that seems wrong....?

Of course, that *might* have something to do with the fact that every single psychological problem, mental health issue and/or pathology I've discovered and explored in therapy seems to have [mainly] originated the year my mom died, though I was an *ancient* nineteen at the time...:-(

For me, it's when someone's doing something embarrassing or about to be made a fool of. Violence is nothing compared to that. (Aren't I warped?) This just happened watching "Herbie Fully Loaded".

I use Fast Forward on my DVD player. If I turn on the subtitles, I can still read them at the 2x speed. It's not a perfect fix, but when stuff gets too intense like that, I FF through it.

thank you for your kind suggestions.

I'm likely to implement pseudo's suggestion, as it is more generally applicable.

However, your suggestion, curt, bears special recognition as being perhaps the coolest thing that I would have ever potentially found in a fortune cookie

I'm not saying it's worse than Bambi. But I can't watch many of the I Love Lucy shows. And my husband prescreens any shows he watches for embarassment scenes.

When my son was little we took him to the midnight show of Rocky Horror.

Some how Rocky Horror became my daughters favorite show - years later. Her other favorite show as a kid was The Holy Grail.

We'd waunder through nurseries with her (age 5ish) following, towing a wagon, yelling "Bring me a shrubbery" or "Bring out your dead"

Which was a fur sight better than when she was singing "I'm a sweet transvestite."

Animated movies according to my T

So, T says that these animated movies are more powerful because they are more dream like. They are allowed easier access to our subconscious, because they are more like our subconscious. The are more imagistic, and less real, so when we are processing them, we have to add our own interpretation, and in doing so, they bypass a lot of our defense mechanisms that we have built up for dealing with real people and real situations.

Something like that. It sounded much more convincing when he was saying it. At least he didn't think I was crazy!!

LMAO! That's freaking hilarious!

My 8 year old nephew asked me to take him to see Scary Movie 4. I was like, sorry, that's not for kids. He said, "But I saw the first three!" And he really did.
