I miss my hamsters *grief trigger*

Posted by Deneb on March 20, 2006, at 19:41:12

I still miss them. :-(

I look at their pictures and I want to hold them again, but I can't because they're dead. :-(

I wish they weren't dead. I wish, I wish.

I wish hamsters lived longer. If I get more hamsters, will the sadness accumulate when they die?

That hasn't been my experience. I miss each of them individually. And sharing my life with new companions replenishes me, rather than their eventual death draining me.

That's good to know. I want to get another hamster this spring. My Mom saw how devastated I was when Hammie died and she thinks it might not be worth the pain, but I disagree.

I think the happiness accumulates, too. And hopefully it outweighs the sadness.

If you love hamsters, you should get another one. At least you will be providing him a nice, loving home and a loving owner for his short life. :)

Deneb I think you should get two. So they have company when you're not home. Love Phillipa

I agree w/ the other posters AND I wanted to add that it is easier to deal w/ the stress of losing a pet when you are in a better place emotionally. When Hammie died, you were in a pretty bad place to start with, so his death made a bad situation worse.

My vote is to get a new hamster or 2. :)

Best,
EE

That's a good way to think about it. :-)

Only dwarf hamsters can be kept in pairs, the bigger Syrian hamsters are territorial and live alone. I'll think about getting dwarves. :-)

I don't think I was in a bad place when Hammie died. At least I don't think so, I have a poor memory of these things. I think I would have been just as devastated if I were in a good place. Hammie was special. He was my first pet ever.
