Thanksgiving jitters

Posted by ClearSkies on November 9, 2005, at 18:18:08

Preparation, grocery shopping, too many people in the kitchen, not enough help!, timing is everything, blowhards, drunks, bad TV, where did all the cutlery go to?, running the dishwasher for three days, waiting for the bathroom, the shower, where is the hot water?, no room in the fridge.

worst thanksgiving ever was from a caterer's and served on paper plates. dried out turkey, styrofoam stuffing.

((((ClearSkies)))),

I know the feeling. I have Christmas for both my family and my husband's every year. It's a little easier since I started catering, but I get Italian food, which I find isn't as easy to mess up. I'm not a big fan of catered turkey, either. My mom did it one year. Only one.

I hope you can find a few shortcuts to help ease the stress. And don't forget to sit down for a little. The dishes can usually wait.

Good luck,
Laurie

P.S. If you need an easy, yummy pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting recipe, I've got a good one. :)

CS, I totally understand your concerns. IT is a lot of pressure to "entertain" people, and have them stay in your house too! Any chance they could stay somewhere else? I find that other people in the house for more than 1 night gets me wound up way too tight.
Hoping for the best!
Mal

Sounds reasonable to me!

I guess I either need to do Thanksgiving myself or forget it entirely. I'm sort of leaning towards forgetting it.

Hey ClearSkies,

Just came back from a session with my energetic healer and saw this. Have you ever tried Thought Field Therapy (TFT) or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). They're simple things you can do yourself in a few minutes and involve tapping specific points on your body with 2 fingers. She did some on me today for a few things and it seemed to work and I've done EFT myself before and found it helpful. If you go to

http://www.healingenergy.com.au and look under therapies there should be a link to EFT and you can download document that tells you all the points. The routine for generalised anxiety is:

Outter end of the eyebrow
Inner end of the eyebrow
Under the arm
Collarbone

Who knows, might help

Dinah, I know how you feel. With my new move two children getting divorced and another in Florida. I have no diningroom furniture and kitchen one doesn't arrive until mid Janurary. my one daughter just getting a divorce suggested getting take-out from Boston Market today. Fondly, Phillipa

This is a big holiday for my family and I usually have at least six houseguests so I know what you're up against. The best part for me, though, is that everyone in my family has stopped drinking so it's a day that I can count on NOT drinking. I find it's a lot of fun if I let go of all expectations and just go with the flow. So what if the turkey is late? But, if the mashed potatoes are lumpy, that's a different story!
best,
antigua

I know what you mean. I think from now 'til January we should be calling each other - for sobriety's sake.

I hate the holidays - the running around and prep and all. We're going to have a small Thanksgiving at home, but still.....

I'm going to try to (starting today??) pre-prepare stuff and pop it into the freezer. Lots of things can be done that way, I just read, like sweet taters and stuffing and vegies and all. They don't need to be cooked, just assemble the ingredients and shove them in a ziploc and put them on ice. Then the day before thaw them in the fridge and on Thanksgiving pour it into a dish and bake it.

Great idea! I'm staying up later these days (turns out that I can't get to sleep now that I don't pass out) and I'd love to talk.
