If this is a joke, it is not funny.

Please be respectful of other people's pain. There are babblers who experience DID. This particular issue is something that people in our society often joke about. We at babble need to support our own and set an example for others.

Thanks,
EE

You are right. My apologies ; ( (nm) » Emily Elizabeth

Hi EE,
I'm glad you posted this. I wanted to post exactly what you said as soon as I saw the first post. But I didn't, for some reason. Now, I feel badly for not being quicker. I usually don't hesitiate like that.

I'm sure these posters just totally weren't thinking....but we have to...to try harder to put ourselves in the shoes of *everyone* on these boards before we post some things, even when they might seem humorous at first....

I kind of feel like an expert, because IRL, (more in the past than the present I surely hope) I have hurt people with impulsive joking. It feels bad afterwards...for everyone. :-(

Anyway...thanks, EE, for stepping up as I should have done.

Thanks for posting that (nm) » Emily Elizabeth

For anyone that i offended, i am truly sorry. My mother has multiple personalities so i do know the hell this illness causes the individual as well as family and friends. I wasn't thinking and again i am very sorry. Looking back on it, i realize i was wrong. I hope anyone i hurt will accept my apology.

I should be more sensitive.. I apologize.. (nm)

Acutally, if you want to know the truth, I heard the joke from a lady with DID at one of my therapy sessions.

She said that humour was the one thing that seemed to provide her with a greater degree of controll over her states.

I figured that since one of my best friends with DID took the joke very well, it would be ok to post.

If I offened anyone in specific, I appologise.

I think that best friends tend to take things better (appreciating you mean no harm). Strangers, on the other hand, have no idea what you are up to.

i definately understand and respect the nature of this disucssion and any inappropriate talk.
but i just wanted to add:
the first time i was in the hospital i was there some time and became friends with a woman with schizophrenia, constantly hearing voices. in one of our groups the leader had us write something down that we considered fun he would read them and we had to guess who wrote it...this lady kept guessing right...finally toward the end we asked her if she was cheating, she said yes... cuz the voices were telling her...we all laughed. she too had a really good sense of humor about her illness. Although i understand sometimes we are more sensitive than other times. so i hope i don't offend anyone by adding that memory.

there's a quote by Bill Cosby that has truly helped me a lot: "if you can laugh about it you can survive it."
