Going to Toronto Stones/Friends concert..AHHGGGG!!

Posted by jay on July 29, 2003, at 10:35:35

Oh man..for someone with social phobia (c'est moi!) to plunk himself down into a crowd of....ohhh..400-500,000 people!!!!! I am taking my neice and her friend...both 19 going on 40 teenage girls..hah. Of course, we will be parked close by because a friend of my sisters lives just down the block from the concert site. BUT...it's gonna take..uhhh..about 10 years to get OUT of that place! The girls wanna go at 8 am..tommorow..(My sleep is all screwed up...so I will likely have *no* sleep tonight!)So, hey what's standing in the middle of 1/2 million people in the middle of summer for..uhhh..15 or so hours?!?!?!

If I don't make it back..well...atleast you will all know what happened to me! (Para-suicidal activity..really..man I better pop about 10 mgs of Xanax hourly..heh.)

Oyyyy..
This is gonna be...painFUL!!...

Uncle J.

So how was it? Did you pay $5 for a bottle of water?? How were the acoustics? I had always wanted to go to a Stones concert, but never got to. Yes, this one I could have went to physically yet the thought of all those people made it mentally impossible. For some reason I had pictured it at the Skydome. If only I had known it was out in the open I may have ventured down into the big city. Thank goodness though, didn't notice any shade. So are you sun burnt?? How the heck was it???

Sorry I took so long to reply. Looking back, now, it really was quite a piece of history. I've been watching some of the video from it, and I am just totally in *awe* over the size...half a million people!

About the bands..well...in honesty, I wasn't extremely impressed by the Stones. But all of the other artists, yes, I was impressed because you could tell they where all freaked being part of the largest concert in history. AC/DC wasn't bad...and I am not a big fan. Rush totally blew me away, as their music is made for this kind of event, and seeing the crowd clap along to 'Spirit of Radio' was nothing short of amazing. Also, the Guess Who where awesome, especially when they went into 'American Woman'.

The nice thing about it was the total 'egalitarian' spirit. People where there because they 'cared', and as you likely know, Toronto has been killed by the SARS-hysteria of the rest of the world. Also, the poor Alberta beef farmers who have been devastated by completely uncalled for American and world sanctions where represented by many vendors selling strictly Canuck beef. And no, the prices weren't bad, but there was way too long of a lineup for water. There are pics of the crowd and show here:

There may likely *never* be a show this size, and for this social-phobic guy, it was quite an experience! Lucky I had a pdoc appointment the next day. :-)And yes, I was 'cooked' by the sun, as there was far from enough shade.

Hope that covers it all...

Jay
