How do you find a therapist who has a similar style? I really want to find a very active therapist with a similar style to Dr phil. Can anyone help?

I don't know how to find a therapist by personality and style.. I would just keep asking around.. See if you can find an agnecy in your area tht might be able to recommend someone. I personally would end up in an arguement with Dr Phil.. His style wouldn't work well with me

I think I need more of a confrontational approach, not necessarily like Dr Phil but that was the only way I could think to describe it. I thought that maybe there was a style he had taken to the extreme that had a name, like psychoanalysis, or CBT. Ill ask around.

I wish I could send biofeedback guy to you. You'd have liked him.

But he does prove that there are therapists out there like him. I'm not sure there's any way to find them without calling for initial phone interviews and asking if they do what you wish, or if you reach a clinic receptionist asking if there's anyone there to match. Don't be afraid to schedule interviews.

CBT therapists are more likely than some other orientations to be very directive. But there are other orientations which might also have the same underlying philosophy as Dr. Phil, and a large number of CBT therapists wouldn't.

I normally wouldn't say this about anyone, but I sorta like how Dr. Phil is an aggressive type. He really want to get people help. I like that.

Oh I agree watch each night and always wish he'd send me somewhere too or arrange for a good therapist for me. I like his caring and kind of if you want to get better you will do it now start anyway. Phillipa

You can have my pdoc! That's his style, without the homey sayings. It works at times for me, but as I've discussed on the board before, I'm not sure it works all the time. He replaced my former pdoc, so I didn't find him, I inherited him.

Dr. Phil is a big CBT guy, with something else thrown in, but i'm not sure what. He wants people to face today and deal with today, and let go of the past, or get other kinds of help for it.
It's helpful to me, but I still believe that some of us, me included, need to get to the underlying issues, too.
good luck!
