dare ask for therapy 2x a week?

Posted by smokeymadison on December 11, 2004, at 14:50:14

i just started seeing this new woman therapist. i think that she may be able to really help me, but she is only in town on Wednesdays, so i am scheduled to see her once a week.

now, i looked up her main office. it is an hour away. i really want to see her twice a week. but i am afraid that she will read it as a typical borderline thing to do--to bother her for for time and stuff. i am willing to drive to her main office i think. i just want to see her twice a week for the rest of the month--until the new year when i have a deducable to pay. right now my insurance is covering 100%. so it makes sense to get some good time in therapy in while i can afford it.

i have only seen her once--do i dare ask for therapy twice a week???

I think you should definitely ask. I worked up courage for a long time to do so, and it has been really been stabilizing. If you're concerned that it seems bpd, as you suggest, to me your insurance reason for doing so appears very rational. Just present it that way. It sounds very reasonable to me.

I certainly hope our T's don't always filter what we say and do through the filter of a diagnosis.

It is also a borderline thing to not ask for the help you need in an appropriate way and then let the situation escalate and then ask for help in an innapropriate way.

So the motto of the BPD diagnosis is that you are d*mn*d if you do and you are d*mn*d if you don't if someone is determined to read your behaviour through the lens of your diagnosis.

I say go for it! Ask her. The worst that can happen is she says 'no' and she may well be flattered that you want to see her more.

thanks, i will (nm)

I was having two sessions a week. When I asked, my therapist wanted to know why I wanted to go twice a week. I think she thought I wanted to get it over with asap. But it was more just because I had NOTHING going on in my life and was SO depressed I just thought it would be more intensive and therefore better.

As it turned out, after a few months of twice a week, I found it better to do once a week. It allowed me to have a bit more of a life, as I started getting better. Twice a week can be very consuming.

But I'd say ask, definately. And then you can see where you go from there. For me, the most important advice for therapy was try to be as honest as you can, even tho its hard. So if you're thinking "ooh I'd rather go twice a week", then that's something she needs to hear you say.

Ok, well good luck!
