Does this sound like ADD?

Posted by KathrynLex on January 23, 2004, at 15:40:26

Hi,

Several phsychiatrists I've seen have suggested that I might have ADD. ADD is not something I know a lot about, but lately I've been having some experiences that make me think that it's an accurate diagnosis.

I talk to people and half way through the conversation I realize I don't know what we're talking about because I haven't been paying attention. This happens at least once a day. I can't sit down to read a book because my mind wanders to something else. I have to read each page twice! At work I'm having trouble completing tasks because I can't sit down and focus on them for a long period of time.

Does this sound like ADD or could I have something else? I would appreciate any feedback. This is new territory for me and I'm a little scared. Thanks!

K.

I don't have ADD, but three of my friends have it, and they are all quite brilliant and successful. People with ADD just seem to have a different way of thinking that they have to work around, but they also seem to be very smart and interesting, from my experience. They also tend to be very innovative. Hey, maybe that is why I like them!

My son has ADHD and your symptoms sound very much like what he experiences.

How was school for you? If you have ADD now, as an adult, you certainly must have been impacted by it as a kid.

Hi Naiad,

As a kid I had a hard time following instructions, and paying attention in class was difficult. But I wasn't hyperactive, just forgetful. There were always assignments that I didn't do because I fogot about them, or tests I wasn't prepared for because I had the test date wrong. I got angry very quickly and startled easily...that has stayed with me. And I can never find my keys, jacket or purse because I always misplace them. I've even lost the car a couple of times in large parking lots. I used to joke about it, but lately it's worrying me.

Kathryn,

Even though its called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, my son's diagnonis is ADHD withouth hyperactivity. It is more common in girls than boys and could have been your issue as a child which would still make it an issue for you especially if you haven't learned any coping techniques.

As you may know, most of the meds for ADHD are stiumlants (Ritalin, Adderall, etc.). Its a paradox, but stimulants work by allowing focus. Background receeds instead of being on the same level as the area on which you are trying to focus, ie. "I parked in row 7G" instead of just seeing a huge parking lot and being overwhlemed with images. Does this make sense?

Lots of people have ADD, to a more or less degree, and there is help out there. Hope you can get the help you seek and that it will make your life more manageable. Good luck!

Hi Naiad,

Thank you for your help. It's so nice to have some more information about ADD. Your input is greatly appreciated.
