Is it ADD?

Posted by Civ on December 1, 2003, at 17:08:31

I'm not sure if I have ADD. It seems to me that there isn't a clear distinction between ADD and compulsive thinking.

These are some of my ADD like symptoms:

racing thoughts

trouble finishing what I start

forgetful at times

easily distracted

I figured it was the combination of anxiety and obsessional thinking. But now I wonder. Last night and today, especially, I just can't concentrate. This has been the case for at least a few months. I know lack of concentration can be a symptom of depression too, but I hope I'm not overlooking ADD. It's so frustrating trying to get an accurate diagnosis.

Assuming you're an adult, check out www.adultadd.com
I had a friend who for years, just considered herself overanxious and unmotivated. Her doctor diagnosed her with Adult ADD a few months ago. I agree, that getting an accurate diagnosis can be difficult; especially when nowadays, almost half the kids in the class are being given Ritalin if they display any bit of distraction at all. Although, I read a study somewhere stating how almost all adults diagnosed with Adult ADD exhibited symptoms as children. Anyway, good luck!

Hello,

I just asked this same question about myself (leave it to the daggumit drug company ads to put the thought in my head). I don't know if I've got that, or if my issues are signs of depression, or side effects of the drug I'm taking.

And Larry Hoover suggested this site to me with a comprehensive test.

Good luck!

To respond to a few issues:

1. I turned 21 last month.

2. I took the test at Dr. Amen's website and came up with these results.

Highly Probable:

ADD Inattentive Type
Cingulate System Hyperactivity
Basal Ganglia Hyperactivity
Limbic System Hyperactivity

The other two categories (forgot the names) were not probable.

Hi,

Yeah, my test was high for cingulate and limbic systems, whatever the heck they are. :-) But I found the diet recommendations for each of those categories to be very interesting. If I eat the way it says I should, I *know* that I feel better, more calm, less anxious, cranky, or depressed.

Worth looking into....good luck!

Susan,

Thanks for posting that link (and thanks to Lar for telling you about it!). It gave me something to think about after taking the test - I printed out the info and I'm taking it to my pdoc this Friday when I see him....

Hmmm...

I was diagnosed with ADD inattentive this year - I'm in my 30's. I wish I had found out about it much sooner, but I'm glad I found out at all. Suddenly a whole bunch of things started to make sense...

One problem was the inattentive type of ADD wasn't classified until recently. Since I was a daydreaming rather than hyperactive child, it was overlooked while I was growing up.

Another problem is that many doctors do not believe adult ADD exists at all. I was lucky in that after bouncing around different doctors for quite a few years, I just happened to go to one whose specialty was ADD. For many years I thought and was told that I was just a depressive.
