Potty training an autistic child ( 10 years old)

Posted by spriggy on September 18, 2005, at 17:30:34

I really had believed that by now, my oldest son would be out of diapers.

I worked on it through the summer but he just doesn't seem to "get it" still.

I would take him to the potty every hour and occasionally he would go (pee) but it was only a "coincidence."

The only progress I see at this point is that after he has a BM, he comes and tells me, " I poo pood" LOL. At least it's bothering him, I suppose.

Does anyone know of any good resources on potty training a disabled child?

Developmentally, he's more like a 2/3 year old than a 10 year old- but he's almost as tall as I am and physically, this is becoming more and more challenging.

Thanks.

Hi Spriggy,

I have an autistic sister... it only (!) took 5 years with her, but I remember it being very difficult for my parents. So I can sympathize and wanted to help you if I could. I found a couple of articles:

http://www.kypost.com/2004/02/04/toilet020404.html
http://www.autismtoday.com/articles/potty_training.htm

and a book: "Toilet Training for Individuals with Autism and Related Disorders " (hope I did the double quote thingie right)

Really, I just did a Google search (potty train autistic child). You've probably already done exhaustive research but maybe these will help?

Good luck!! It's so difficult parenting an autistic child... my son isn't autistic (that I know of, he's only 20 months) but like I said, my sister is, and my brother is Asperger's, so I've seen what my parents go through.
