Effexor XR on kid

Posted by dgz on March 13, 2001, at 8:49:02

My doctor prescribed Effexor XR 225mg to my 12 years old kid. Has anyone had similar experience on this? Is this safe? Any good/bad results? Any comments would be appreciated.

I haven't any experience with Effexor in kids, but I do know that there are clinical trials for pediatric use going on now.

perhaps you could search medline or the manufacturer's site.

> > Hi. I usually post on one of the other sites, but wanted to check this site out. Just saw your post and will relate my 14 yr old daughter's story. She was diagnosed with ADD and depression at age 13. Her pdoc prescribed Effexor XR, which she introduced slowly (37.5 mg for a month, gradually increasing up to 225 mg.). After it looked like it was helping her depression, she prescribed Ritalin first (problems with that) and then Adderal for the ADD.

> > She was on the Effexor for a little over a year when we noticed that her moods were changing again... she didn't seem happy anymore. We talked to the doc and she said, well, maybe it's time to wean off. We started weaning a couple of months ago and, as of 8 days ago, she's been Effexor free. We weaned because many people, myself included, experience withdrawal effects. My daughter suffered through headaches, nausea and vomiting, and dizziness off and on for a few weeks, but they seem to have subsided. However, since weaning, she has become irritable and doesn't seem happy. I've decided to contact another pdoc to see what the next steps are.

> > Everyone's experience with Effexor is different. It helped my depression and my daughter's, but, because of the withdrawal issues, I'm not sure I would ever go back on it again. Just proceed slowly and educate yourself by going to PUBMED and the FDA sites. My daughter did not appear to have any side effects from taking the Effexor. We just think that she sort of hit a 'brick wall' and started to relapse. Our choices were to either increase the dosage or get off it... We chose the latter.

I am surprised that the doctor would prescribe that high a dose to start with. I started at 75mg (by mistake - the doctor prescribed 37.5 but the pharmacist dispensed 75) and I had a very difficult time adjusting for the first week or so. This is not a pleasant medication and has side effects, and I would think that such a high dose would not be a good place to start. Wyeth, the manufacturer, recommends starting at 37.5 and gradually increasing the dosage over time. Check out www.effexorxr.com for the company line.

Also, when I Googled just now to find the website, I saw an article called "Wyeth: Effexor Unsuitable For Depressed Children" in which the company suggests that Effexor is not good for kids. Check it out at www.yourlawyer.com/practice/news.htm?story_id=6600&topic=Effexor

You may want to have another discussion with your doctor.
