Is the Harry Potter series worth the fanfare?

Posted by Racer on July 15, 2007, at 14:54:56

I've read, I think, all of them. My husband asked me, the other day, whether I thought they were really as phenomenal as the hype surrounding them. I know my opinion on that, but I wondered about other people? Do the rest of you think they live up to the hype?

As it happens, I do. I'm a very critical sort of reader, probably because I do read so much, and they truly strike me as worth all the excitement. In fact, as someone who reads a lot of children's books, I would say they're about the best contemporary children's books I've read in -- well, in a very, very long time. They're original, they're well written, they're gripping, and they're engaging. I was drawn in to the stories, cared about the characters, and generally thought they were well worth the time I spent reading them.

So, what do other people think of them?

And why I keep up with the tradition of reading them cover to cover..

It was when I probably at my pooreliest.. For 3 days I had sat on my sofa, or hidden under my duvet, and awake and totally freaking out. All I could think about was killing myself, I had taken a number of "small" overdoses and had put THE plan into action. I had enough sense when designing the plan that it would take atleast 12 hours to undertake..

I had a night ahead of me, and I was awake still and just waiting. My husband had bought me a series of 3 books that were taking childrens literature by storm. To kill some time I picked teh first one up.

18 hours later and two books down, I was stil alive, I ddn't want to carry out my plan and I slept. After I slept, I read the 3rd book cover to cover.

They are gripping and exciting.. They take you away from your reality, which is what I love about a really good book. You can immerse yourself in it, and really know what everything looks like, and smells like..

Yes, to me they are worth all the hype.. They saved my life - and I don't mean that lightly.

Nikki, a most eloquent post, and I truly don't mean it lightly. At their best, books take me out of where I don't want to be and put me where I can live vicariously for a few precious hours.
Sometimes, that's the difference between a Good day and a Bad day.
Sometimes it's an even more critical difference, as you have seen for yourself.

Thanks so much for posting this. It means a lot to me to see the positive power of the printed word put into action like this.

I've only read some of the Chamber of Secrets one, and that because I was reading it out to my son, but both kids have read some, and my daughter has read every one and got me to get the latest one as soon as it was released so she could read it on the weekend before getting on the Monday morning bus, which she did.

And that is just great.
