Books? Ditch 'em all

Posted by FredPotter on April 25, 2007, at 23:23:44

I'm fed up of reading self-help books for psychiatric disorders. I'll just take Nardil and read books on other topics. It's like diet books. The reason there are so many is none of them work

Bugger self help books.

I'm reading "Hope Against Hope" by Nadezhda Mandelstam about living through the Stalinist terror.

Years back, I saw Martin Amis speak, and someone asked him what his father thought about his books? He said that, as far as he knew, his father hadn't read his books -- because he had taken a vow never again to read any book which did not begin, "The sound of a shot split the night air..."

If it was good enough for Kingsley Amis, it's certainly good enough for me!

I read far too many "potato chip books" -- no nutritional value, but you can't eat just one... Right now, I'm on book seven of "The Dresden Files," by Jim Butcher. Amazingly, book six was the best so far, rare for a series. Quite enjoyable books.

Next, I believe, will be "Illywhacker," by Peter Carey... Maybe not a potato chip, but still not meatloaf, if you know what I mean...

I've always been irritated by Australian books. I've read one or two of Peter Carey's. It puzzles me why I respond like this. The only Austrlalian book I actually got enthralled by was "Dead Europe" (Christos Tsiolkas) (because it was so unaustralian?)

Although I do have a very soft spot for "Wake In Fright", the celluloid of which film was recently discovered in a Hollywood vault and is being cleaned up for rerelease. It is about human relations (loosely termed) in the Australian outback. I haven't read the book.

Andrei Makine is coming to the Sydney Writers Festival, and I shall be able to hear him.

"Requiem for the East" is very good.

Having said what I said above, I am now reading "Against Depression" by Peter D. Kramer. It's not a self-help book and is difficult to read, both condensed and repetitive. And yet it contains hot-off-the-press findings about brain anatomy in depressed persons, that make the effort very worthwhile Fred
