Supplements: how many are too many?

Posted by Christ_empowered on July 14, 2014, at 4:17:52

OK. So I cobbled together a sort of DIY Orthomolecular protocol, based mostly on Dr.Hoffer's stuff from the early days "Mega-Vitamin Therapy," in the early 50s...back when Thorazine wasn't even yet available everywhere (ECT, insulin coma. Good times!)

So...I take : 12 grams c, 1000 IU E, 75,000 IU beta carotene, b-100 complex, 3+ grams niacinamide, 4+grams taurine, 5,000 IU d3, 200mcgs selenium, 30mgs OptiZinc, 1 gram green tea extract, 200-400 mgs grape seed extract.

That's the current line up, lol. I am physically healthy. My allergies seem so improved that I rarely require an antihistamine. I take 3 psych meds and function quite well. Even my hair looks awesome, and I had split ends as a 12 year old, lol.

I loved OM at first, because it seemed perfect...just high dose lots of stuff, combine it, and take it forever. Awesome! Now, I'm starting to wonder. I don't think its dangerous or anything, just...

...is there a huge difference between psych meds and massive doses of selected vitamins? I mean, at what point have I gone from supplementation to a clever form of drugging?

Ugh.

I think this is too much. For me, more than 500 mg of vitamin c a day makes me a bit flat. I would start with nothing and increase / test until the desired effect is achieved. I would definitely lower the vitamin e.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what you're doing, especially if you feel it helps you keep the number/dose of psych meds down. Do you work with a doctor who has knowledge of high dosing of supplements? There are adverse effects involved with really high doses of some vitamins, including vitamin E and niacin. And the amount of C you take is especially high...I always read that once you get to a certain point, your body can only absorb so much C the rest just passes through.

Are you still taking the fish oil?

hey...

...I had to cobble together a DIY OM thing. I live in the southeast (not urban), so there aren't any OM docs around. I think there's one or two in Atlanta, but...wow..that's a drive, and I can't stand the sheer bigness of the ATL.

So, I'm just poppin the supplements based on stuff from the 50s. My current shrink knows I'm into OM and he's recommended some blood work, so that should probably happen in the next couple months.

I keep not taking the fish oil because of everything else. Lately, I've been having stomach issues, so it makes me wonder...what's going on? High dose C is known for that; throw other stuff into the mix and...who knows, right? Right.

I'll start back on fish oil.

hey, herpills--

The OM people recommend large doses of C. Ranging from 4 grams (minimum) up to whatever Linus Pauling's end dose was (I wanna say 18 grams/day).

There's apparently some alternative medicine use of massive doses, orally and/or IV, to treat and prevent all sorts of probs. I think Linus Pauling's argument was that humans lost some kinda gene that let us make our own C, and that's one reason why we get so sickly towards the end of our lives.
