altering my OM line up, feeling good...

Posted by Christ_empowered on March 10, 2014, at 8:49:23

I know; "More Orthomolecular stuff?!?!," but seriously: it helps me tremendously. Plus, its fun because I can alter the line up to get different/better results.

I'm now doing 3x daily dosing. 6 time-release grams vitamin c per dose. 200mgs b6 at the first 2 doses of the day, plus the b-100 (time release).

I take a high dose of green tea extract and grape seed extract. I'm not sure why, but they seem to help my mood. I also take 2 grams/taurine at each dose, for a total of 6 grams/day. 4 grams/day was shown in a small study in Australia and I think a similar one at McLean to work with atypicals to help stabilize psychotic people faster w/ fewer side effects than an atypical alone (or an atypical as part of an extensive cocktail, I imagine).

I upped the niacinamide. Mild sedation has been the only side effect. I now take 3 grams x 3 daily. In OM, you can go up that high (sometimes higher) with niacinamide and/or niacin (normal release niacin, not time release) as long you keep up with the rest of the b vitamins and keep your C dose at least as high as your b3 dose. In my case, I take 2x as much C as I do niacinamide.

High dose C apparently works directly on dopamine receptors. How, why its tranquilizing is beyond me, but I do feel calmer and far less agitated and there's no more low-grade paranoia. Excellent. Time release works for me because I get to do 3 doses instead of 4+ and there's no stomach upset. Plus, there's some indication that time release, water soluble vitamins are better absorbed (however, time release niacin is more likely than IR niacin to cause liver issues. Weird, huh?).

I'm thinking about cutting my green tea extract dose from 1 gram x 3 to 500mgs x 3 and keeping the grape seed extract at 200 x 3. The grape seed extract+green tea extract+zinc+taurine is a rip off of a loreal pill for hair loss. I ramped up the dose (that's how OM works--ramp it up to as much as you can tolerate, for as long as you can tolerate) to try to get health benefits, both mental and physical.

I also take 400 micrograms selenium, 30mgs optizinc (supposedly a wonderful form of zinc), 75,000 IU natural form beta carotene+mixed carotenoids, 5,000 IU D3, and 1,000 IU natural form E w/ mixed tocopherols.

I'm calmer. My mood is more stable. I don't have any EPS or noticeable cognitive dulling. My allergy and skin issues (eczema, so the hay fever feeds into the skin issues) are well-controlled. My hair has grown back, thick and glossy. Weirdly enough, its a different color, and everybody thinks I'm getting expen$ive dye jobs, lol. My scalp issues (my hair loss was only part DHT/hormone driven) have resolved; they're easily managed with salicylic acid shampoo and head and shoulders.

I dropped astaxanthin, soy isoflavones. I may be reducing my green tea extract dosage. I'm adding in (started, then stopped) fish oil. Since the core of OM is to keep things as basic as possible (vitamins>amino acids>botanicals>pharmaceuticals), I've been making an effort to up the C to Linus Pauling levels and see where that takes me. So far, so good. For the hair loss, I may add in BioSil...its a stabilized form of silica used to boost levels of collagen, elastin, and keratin. That sort of thing (a mineral) is more in line with OM than green tea extract+grape seed extract+zinc, since the latter uses botanicals (which can be thought of as slower acting, complicated, under-researched pharmaceuticals..they're just from natura, that's all).

Then again, I'm awfully fond of having hair again (having hair loss in my early 20s was terrible; people were so cruel), so I'll probably keep the herbal line up and just add in full dose biosil.

Ramble, ramble, ramble...anyway, just thought I'd once again update everybody on my line up and encourage those who have the time and inclination to give OM a whirl. Traditional OM isn't nearly as extensive or high-dose as what I do, but you have lots of flexibility in determining what to take, what form(s) to take, what dosage, what extra "goodies" to throw in, etc.

I'm on a "clean" neuroleptic (Abilify, 30) and a cleaned up anticonvulsant (trileptal, 1200), a low-dose sedative PRN (Neurontin, 100mgs up to 3/day), and an old school AD (Tofranil, 150). If I did OM the way Hoffer did it, I'd probably be on Triavil or something, lol. OM makes neuroleptics much, much, much more tolerable, so even freakishly sensitive people like me can potentially tolerate older, cheaper neuroleptics.

I wish more "crazy" people could do OM. The results take a while and some people will always need meds, but it seems to make a huge difference in quality of life and overall health, at least for me.

Christ_empowered,

I just wanted to let you know that I think it's great that you're doing well with the orthomolecular regimen that you're utilizing alongside your medication regimen. It certainly sounds like the supplements that you're taking are contributing positively to your well being, and I wish you continued success with everything that you're doing treatment wise.

I might very well add in some of the supplements that you're taking to my own regimen, but for the time being, I'm waiting to see what kind of long-term effect vitamin D3 (alongside the niacin and Abilify that I've been taking) will have on my symptoms. So far, I've been noticing mostly good things from the vitamin D3, but I think that it will be some time before I'll be able to say for sure that the vitamin is doing some long-term good (or no long-term good, depending on what happens). And at that point, if I think that more supplements along the lines of what you're taking might benefit me, I will certainly try them.

At any rate, I wanted to acknowledge your post and say that it's encouraging to hear about the results that you seem to be getting from your regimen. Take care, and best wishes.

Tomatheus
