High fat diet and depression

Posted by Trotter on December 16, 2012, at 3:50:10

Thought I might share some of my recent research.

High fat diet increases translocation of LPS (endotoxaemia) and lowers bifidobacteria.

High fat diet increased intestinal permeability.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18305141

High fat diet decreased bifidobacteria and increased LPS shedding gram negative bacteria.

Very strong link between both translocation of LPS and intestinal permeability and major depression.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18283240

High fat diet directly linked to depression in mice.
http://psychcentral.com/news/2012/05/28/high-fat-diet-linked-to-depression-anxiety-in-mice/39295.html

High fat diet caused changes in the brains of mice causing depressive symptoms
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/12/121212092104.htm

Corelation between high fat diet and depressed humans.
http://www.livestrong.com/article/436309-why-fatty-foods-make-people-feel-depressed/

Translocation of LPS caused by high fat diet was reversed by FOS, possibly due to increase in bifidobacteria.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17823788

Hypothesis:
I think a high fat diet promotes 'bad' bacteria in the bowel and inhibits 'good' bacteria such as bifidobacteria. The bad bacteria cause 'leaky gut' and allow LPS to cross the bowel/blood barrier. This translocation of LPS provokes an immune response, triggering the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines which travel to the brain and cause brain fog and depression.

Consuming a bifidobacterial probiotic such as Align, and/or taking a pro-bifido prebiotic such as Bimuno may reduce bad bacteria, repair the leaky gut and inhibit the translocation of LPS, leading to a reduction in brain fog and depression. Of course reducing fat in the diet would also be a good idea.

Some fat is necessary for a healthy brain. Don't eliminate all fats from your diet. Another good thing is to get enough quality proteins in your diet. Limit the fast food, but you don't have to give it up entirely. Get good fats from nuts, canola oil, olive oil, and a little saturated fat is not a bad thing. Moderation in all things is the key. Don't believe all the hype that everything you eat should be low fat. Some cholesterol is good for the body. Just don't overdo it. Also, fish oil and things like borage oils are good for the body and the heart.

I made good experiences with high fat, high protein and fairly low carb diet.

In every respect.
