100,000 IU a week for depression

Posted by LostBoyinNCReturns on March 18, 2012, at 17:34:25

I was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency back in 2009 by my primary care physician. He put me on a prescription supplement, something called Drisdol. There is a generic for it that is dirt cheap. He had me taking two 50,000 IU pills a week. I found that it really increased my energy levels, as well as improved my immunity.

Anybody else experienced dramatically increased energy levels from taking large amounts of vitamin D? I swear by drisdol now. I also swear by having a good suntan if the weather is warm out, after my vitamin D experience.

Thanks for sharing this, I've often taken a vitamin D supplement with my meds but never more than 1000 iu. I noticed Drisdol can be used as high as 500,000iu?!? Did also notice it is D2, and I know I have read somewhere that the D3 version is better, don't remember why...

Yeah, Ive read the same stuff about vitamin D. Ive taken both the prescription drisdol stuff (high dose) and the OTC stuff (D3) and in my experiences, the prescription stuff kicks the crap out of any OTC vitamin D I have taken so far.

My GP doc currently wont prescribe anymore drisdol for me because I technically not vitamin D deficient anymore. They used to use it for stuff like rickets in children and teenagers and maybe as an adjunct treatment for TB. Vitamin D all the attention goes to bone health, but trust me, it also has a psychoactive effect especially if you take it in high doses. And it also improves my immunity a lot.

To get the drisdol stuff (or generic equivalent), you normally have to have a doctor say you are formally vitamin D blood deficient. Or suffering from a vitamin D related deficiency related illness. Most docs dont know much about it beyond bone health, as I mentioned. Trying to educate them about it is usually like banging your head against a wall, IMO.

Suntanning also works just as good, <thumbs up>. And you dont need no stinking doctor's prescription for that.

Im gonna find a GP doc somewhere who will rx the generic drisdol in high dose, even if you are technically OK in it on the blood tests. I noticed it helped me mood/energy/immunity wise even after my D levels normalized.

I just have a super conservative GP doc, probably has anxiety problems or is afraid of getting sued. Time for me to get one that actually wants to make me feel good ALL the time. If drisdol is part of that, so be it.

Just about the time I had read an article about vit. D deficiency, I got an e-mail from my GP suggesting that we test me levels. We did, and I was low, just outside the bottom of the 'normal' range. She told me to start on a dose of something like 500iu/day... but I read that ..."For proper functioning, a healthy human body utilizes around 3,000-5,000 IU of vitamin D per day." from the Vit D council web site. I have a few chronic conditions, which the web site suggests that a body with one or more chronic conditions most likely uses greater amounts daily. So, I blew-off my GP's recommended dose and started using I think about 5K iu/day. We re-tested and my levels dramatically increased, to the upper end of the 'preferred' range. Since my numbers increased me well into the 'normal' range I decided to leave well enough alone. Maybe I should try more to achieve greater energy benefits and maybe brain function? Lots of good info at: http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/how-to-get-your-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-supplementation/ This helps boost my RX med for my depression & anxiety, which are still critically needed for me. I'm rudely reminded every time I forget to take my Venlafaxine (Effexor) through *ridiculous* and dramatic levels of emotion. So far, my Effexor is still a required RX for me, but vit. D did help bolster things when it seemed like my RX wasn't working as well anymore. Good luck.
