I find that both taurine and GABA have some usefulness for my schizophrenia. Both can be calming, but in my experience I find that taurine works better for anxiety when it is not used everyday, and instead, I use the GABA everyday and the taurine every few days or so or when I need to feel more relaxed around people. I've read that taurine may have some applications for Autism, but I haven't heard any evidence that it is useful for schizophrenia. For me, I use it on occasion when I am around people for any length of time, and I do feel more relaxed. The combination of GABA and taurine is better than each alone, in my experience.
When I take the taurine occasionally, I am more relaxed and so people are more receptive to me. It's a good feeling.

> LaoI love Taurine. I, like you, have found that it isn't great to use everyday as it loses its strength. I also find that if I take more than 500mg, it can cause irritability. I take it at night for it's calming effect (though if I take too much, I'll wake up in the middle of the night very tense). It's also what I reach for if I am having a panic attack or any kind of "episode," be it anxious or depressed. It has a wonderful emotionally "evening" effect. GABA is sort of similar though less pronounced. Sometimes I don't feel it, other times if I take too much I will feel tension. Sometimes for sleep I feel that GABA will drop me off on the doorstep of slumber, but I can't quite make it through the door. It's odd. I prefer both to Theanine. I've also found Taurine to be a nice companion to glycine for sleep.

I really like my taurine. I take 6 grams daily, in 2 doses of 3 grams each. I don't really find it that sedating, probably because I naturally run on the agitated end of things, even on meds.
Anyway, combined with everything else, the taurine has been a real godsend for me. If you take a neuroleptic, you may want to consider taking some taurine daily--I read online that they've used taurine in animals to block brain changes (including brain changes that lead to movement disorders) induced by haloperidol.

I take some taurine before every doctor visit because I feel anxious sitting in the waiting room. Don't ask me why, but the taurine taken in this way helps my anxiety. GABA doesn't quite do it unless I take 750mg, but I like the taurine more. Seems to help when your thoughts are on overdrive. It doesn't compare to Ativan, but for me it's the next best thing and kava kava too, but I can't tolerate the kava anymore. I only use 500mg of taurine each time, and it's enough for me.

Discovered that GABA can help with both anxiety and depression, and it works nicely with high dose vitamin B6. The dose I seem to do well on is 750mg per day with 200mg of B6 per day. As high dose B6 can cause stimulation, sometimes overstimulation, the GABA knocks the overstimulation way down so the B6 is more comfortable. I tried using 500mg of GABA, but this dose doesn't work well. You need at least 750mg, and some brands make a 750mg capsule or tablet. The one I use is Source Naturals brand.
