A cup of Joe for the Afternoon Blues?

Posted by Lao Tzu on March 3, 2011, at 15:42:58

In addition to my meds and vitamins, I find that a small cup of coffee in the morning and mid-afternoon helps perk me up and I feel somewhat better. That is to say, if your anxiety is under control with meds and/or vitamins, a cup of coffee now and then might be good medicine. I knew someone who was on Paxil, and since this medicine can make you feel tired during the day, he used to drink a few cups of coffee each day. He smoked too, but I don't recommend that behavior. Some people say green tea gives them a lift, but I always felt worse from drinking green tea. I don't know why that is. I guess everybody's different. I gave up on the energy drinks. They may help somewhat, but I don't like all the crap they put in them. Coffee works for me.

I'm a fan of coffee myself, so I have to agree with you. Now that my anxiety+agitation is under control, I can indulge w/o any problems. The coffee seems to lift my mood and improve my thinking a bit, plus its a lot cheaper than energy drinks (assuming you make it yourself).

My day is usually better, upbeat and more productive when I have a cup or 2. I really think its addictive. Try giving up coffee after having it every day for a year or more. It almost as hard to quit as amphetamine for me. Thankful it seems to not be harmful.

I've read that some studies indicate potential health benefits (reduced type II diabetes risk, reduced Parkinson's risk)from regular+moderate coffee consumption. That's not say its not potentially addictive--I've found that now its hard for me to fully wake up w/o a cup or two in the AM--but at least something good may come of indulging in this particular habit.

I've heard that the Finnish often have a cup before bed to help them sleep.
