How much vitamin C? Time-release?

Posted by Christ_empowered on March 8, 2011, at 6:32:03

I take several (4+) grams of vitamin C, in addition to various other supplements (mostly antioxidants) daily. I'm thinking I could ramp up the dose a little bit, b/c when I take 2-3 grams at a time on top of my usual dose, I feel so calm; not chemically tranquilized, mind you, but healthy and able to deal with whatever comes my way. Also, the vitamin C seems to be helping my allergies.

So, I'm thinking about time release vitamin C. Its more expensive, which is unfortunate, but I'm thinking I could ramp up the dose (I was thinking 12 grams daily) and divide it into 2 doses or more or less all day coverage.

Any thoughts and/or experiences?

I know the body can only absorb so much vitamin C at a time, I think 12 grams seems like a really high dose, I doubt you would get any additional benefits as the body would just eliminate what it couldn't absorb. It sounds like 2-3 grams is helping you a lot, maybe just stick with same dose? herpills ps I only take 500mg/day which comes in my b complex

Wow!!! It's amazing you can tolerate that much Vitamin C without side effects. I take only a piddling amount (500mg) per day because any more affects my sleep. A few years ago I had tried to take a lot more, but I just didn't feel right. Do you think there could be an interaction of Vitamin C with antipsychotics? I remember years ago, I just kept downing the Vitamin C during a cold. I remember feeling really good. I haven't been able to do that since the psychosis happened. Vitamin C always made me feel less anxious and I think it may affect some neurotransmitters, specifically, norepinephrine, and what do you know, norep is implicated in some forms of anxiety and depression. I say, whatever works for you, that is great!

yeah, I'm surprised I can tolerate this much vitamin c, too. I did read somewhere that there was a small study comparing patients diagnosed with schizophrenia treated with an atypical+placebo with those treated with an atypical+vitamin c. The vitamin c group did better on whatever scales they use to measure schizophrenia and related disorders.

Vitamin C chills me out. I think I'm going to get extended release and aim for around 6 grams vitamin c per day in 2 doses. The alpha lipoic acid I take is supposed to boost vitamin c levels through some process I don't understand, so I should get more mileage out of fewer pills w/ the ala on board. Or at least I hope so.

The r alpha lipoic acid I took made me feel great but caused (you guessed it) insomnia.

I felt alert and calm during the day.

I take about 1-3g slow release Vit C from NOW. If I feel sick, I'll take 1g every two hours or so. I've never had stomach problems even taking this on an empty stomach. I doubt this is the case for everyone.

I recently started upping my Mag Glycinate dose to more like 600-800mg a day. I can't say enough about how calm yet energetic I feel. All my muscles feel relaxed and supple. The energy is definitely felt in the body with this one, but also mentally.

Mag goes well with ample C and zinc.

have you tried the old-school, plain old alpha lipoic acid? That's what I take (600mgs/day), and that's what has been used in a number of studies that showed ALA to be useful for a number of conditions. Plus, its cheaper than r-ala.

Yes, I've tried ALA in the past. I could not tolerate more than 50mg per day. For some reason, I'm very sensitive to it. I had the same experience with COQ10. I just could not tolerate a high dosage of it, or I would experience side effects. The ALA was interesting. I actually felt somewhat energized by it, but after awhile I could only take 50mg every few days because I suppose it started building up in my system, and I could not take it everyday.
