I find that lower dosages of DLPA are more beneficial than higher dosages. I get side effects from 500mg capsules, but if I take only 250mg per day, I have little or no side effects. DLPA has very good antidepressant potential in my experience, especially if you've tried L-tyrosine and that amino doesn't work for you. I get no response from Tyrosine, but a big AD response from DLPA. I guess everybody's different as far as their response to certain aminos. I'm just wondering who of you out there has been using DLPA for a long time and how satisfied are you with its antidepressant effect for extended periods of time?

The best result from the DLPA is with the Thorne Research brand. It works very well for depression. However, it is rather activating so if you have a concomitant anxiety disorder, it might not be the best supplement to take. You would probably do better on GABA or tyrosine, which seems to be less activating in my experience. What I like about DLPA is its effect on endorphin levels. This promotes a healthy mood, but what I'm concerned about is whether elevating your endorphin levels everyday is a wise thing to do. Can you have a withdrawal effect from taking DLPA?

There were some small clinical trials of DLPA decades ago. They used doses of 75mg to 250mg. Results were very good, but being so long ago you kind of have to question the methodology and accuracy a little bit.
Tyrosine is aweful, for me anyway. But DLPA I kind of liked. It was not a miracle or anything, but helped in subtle ways. I ran into trouble with it causing tinnitus to be louder and also started some tingling in my fingers. I was only taking 75mg. I have a lot of complications, so it wasn't DLPAs fault. I want to try DPA instead of DLPA.
Effects on that small dose....
Mild endurance/energy boost during the day.
Mild improvement of mood.
Mild improvement of social comfort.
A little harder to get to sleep, but sleep was much deeper.
A little harder to go pee.The benefits were subtle and began to be noticeable at about day 3. If not for the complications I would have definitely wanted higher dosing, maybe somewhere in the 100mg to 200mg range.

I find that 250mg works best for me, but like you said, it can interfere with sleep in some people. It provides a mild mood boost, but I really don't think I need it with all the other things I'm supplementing with. I find the essential fatty acids to be better for mood than the DLPA, but this may not be the case for everybody. Higher doses of DLPA seem to be too activating for me, and this spells trouble when you have schizophrenia. Plus, I don't need any more trouble sleeping than I already have.

I have found that DLPA interferes with my sleep and is modestly helpful for depression. SSRIs taken with various vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids seem to work better for me than taking DLPA, but that's just me. Some people swear by amino acids, and I'm sure they help many people.
