N-Acetyl-Cysteine and Bipolar

Posted by Lao Tzu on September 15, 2008, at 14:44:43

I've heard that N-Acetyl-Cysteine may be beneficial for bipolar disorder, although it may take up to 8 weeks to see any results. There is some good scientific evidence that it works, at least in some people. I started trying NAC, and I noticed that I can only tolerate small dosages in the beginning. I'm trying to take 150mg during the day and at bedtime to start. This, of course, may be too low a dosage to do anything meaningful, but as I've discovered with a lot of other supplements, I have to start at low dosages and gradually increase the dosage up to the desired effect. This may be the same situation with NAC, start low then increase gradually. I'll post my results of this experiment as the weeks and months progress. If you would like to know, I'm trying the Source Naturals brand of NAC because it comes in tablet form, and that way I can cut the tablet into smaller pieces and take lower dosages to start.

I'm very sensitive when I take any supplement or medication. Believe it or not, I know how every vitamin, mineral, amino acid, herb, etc. feels when I take it. When I take NAC, I can only take at most 300mg at a time because it makes me feel "dumbed down", and if I take too much of it, it disrupts my mood.
