how long for flax oil to go bad in the fridge?

Posted by iforgotmypassword on May 31, 2008, at 12:54:51

i guess it may have been there for a year or over. apparently may 08 is it's "best before." is there any basis for this. i know omega-3s break down quickly, but in the fridge? should it really be already breaking down significantly?

if i polished it off in the next little bit, would there be any risk? (any harmful fatty acids or chemicals by now or something?) would the ALA omega-3 level be really that much lower?

It depends on how it tastes. Flax oil should have a slightly "green" (as in grassy), nutty flavor. It should never taste bad. Even when I buy Spectrum or Barlean's, two of the best at the Flax oil game, they have never survived past their "best buy" date in the fridge. And I have a cold fridge. Usually, these oils are delivered to stores or to us in the mail, unrefrigerated. This is not ideal, and in my experience, can cause an oil to arrive already rancid, even though the date is still good. So, taste is the best way to tell.
