Acetyl-l-carnitine experience anyone?

Posted by bleauberry on May 3, 2008, at 19:25:36

Just wondering how ALCAR has affected others. If you have tried it, please let me know what doses and what effects?

I tried 250mg the other day. The bottle said 250mg X 4 per day. I'm cautious, just did one. Felt some energy, some warmth, maybe a slightly improved mood but hard to tell.

Slept better than usual and the scary waking nervousness I am accustomed to was very much tamed down to almost nothing. Cool. And this tightness pain in my left calf was nearly gone. Cool. Had no idea I might expect any benefits on those things.

Second day did 250mg morning and 250mg lunch. No feelable effect from either dose. A couple hours after the last dose, I could tell a rapid worsening of depression was beginning. Felt like the same deep dark place Adderall sent me to. The rest of the day and evening got darker and darker. I also got a vicious headache in the back of my head down the back of my neck, especially bad if I bent over to pick something up, tie a shoe, brush teeth, whatever.

Slept better than usual. Again, no morning anxiety and morning leg pain. Still depressed, but not as bad, looking forward to bouncing back to my baseline, which is lousy but at least better than this. Headache/neckache still there, but not as much.

Today no dose. No way. Slowly as the day went on I settled back to baseline. Leg pain is still gone. Curious how morning waking will be.

Maybe to keep the physical benefits I might try 125mg once every other day.

I am horrified to see in clinical studies they used doses like 3000mg per day and up. Oh my.

Most websites claim there aren't many side effects. But I did find one that seemed more realistic. It listed lack of appetite...yes that happened to me. It listed headache...yes. It listed stuffy nose...yes. It listed depression...yes. Strange how in the clinical trials ALCAR treated depression as good or better than Amisulpride.

Anyway, how was ALCAR with you?

I just took some yestrday along with taurine. They both contain 10mg of vitamin B6. I felt much more energetic, almost to the point of becoming manic. This happened that last time I tried them. I also felt extremely nauseated, but I wober if this is due to combinging taurine with ibuprofen (the label says not to use with asoirin, but I don't know if this applies to other NSAIDs). Both of them were in 550mg strengths.

I took it several years ago for a few months. Don't remember the dosage though. Couldn't detect any side effects or benefits.
