Food Intolerances - anyone know whats going on?

Posted by Jimmyboy on April 13, 2008, at 12:13:01

Does anyone know what is happening physiologically when you have food intolerances? As in, what exactly is going on with your immune system when you have a bad reaction, also how long does this process go on? Do you always have this intolerance and is there anything to do to lessen your response to the offending food?

thanks for any answers

JB

With me, a high IGE (Immunoglogulin E, a marker of allergies and reactivity) is high.
I react to a range of foods including yeasts, sulphur based preservatives, Valium(!), tianeptine(!) (just about anything), certainly commercially prepared fast foods, dairy products and so on.

There are no easy ways to lower high IGE's (I have been told). Generally the idea is to avoid the offending allergen/stimulus, which probably means a strict diet, and (in my case would mean moving, because one of my problems is mould and this is a humid climate).

I have heard that perilla seed (not oil) will lower high IGE, and also reishi mushroom.

Sometimes they are caused by something called Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Our intestines should be like a hose - the wastes go out of our body & do NOT leak into our body. Sometimes something happens & microscopic amounts of partly digested food does leak into our body.

It's my understanding that something like this happens: our body recognizes these substances as foreign matter & somehow develops a sensitivity to them.

Various members of our family have had success in dealing with this problem by using a product called:

L-Glutamine

The kind I have right now is called IntestiNew. "supports a healthy intestinal lining"

The site listed on the container is:

www.renewlife.com

1-800-485-0960

This product also has N-acetyl D-glucosamine & other stuff in it.

NAG (above) is also good for Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Sometimes a systemic overgrowth of Candida (a yeast that probably most people have to some extent) can cause Leaky Gut Syndrome. I had Candidiasis systemically & went on an 'anti-candida' diet for 2 years. One of my symptoms was sensitivity to chemicals, fragrances, etc. I had various symptoms, the most scarey of which was my tongue would swell. My doctor sent me to an allergist, who suggested the anti-candida diet.
He also said I was to carry 2 Epipens (adrenaline) just in case!

This might give you a start in looking at causes.
Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions you want to.

:-) Kath

Hey Kath

Did you find l-glutamine stimulating?

Some people apparently do.

Insomnia for me is often the limiting factor, though I'm never sure what has aggravated it, if not caused it.

Hi!

I didn't notice it affecting me.

It's actually only way more recently that I heard of l-glutamine.

When I was having the problems with candida, I used MANY supplements & the main one I used for Leaky Gut Syndrome was NAG.

At that time, I tested as sensitive to LOTS of foods - interestingly enough, many of them were ones I ate pretty well every day.

I understand that that's another contributing factor to developing food sensitivities - eating some really frequently.

Have you ever done a questionnaire (sp?) to determine whether or not you're likely to have Candida?

My 2 books on it are out on loan to a friend right now, but I think the name of the main one is The Yeast Connection - by ----- Brooks (can't remember first name; I think he's a doctor.)

It really sucks to have sensitivities to things.
as to insomnia - have you ever tried any Homeopathic remedies?

The company name of a good brand is "Hyland's". A good one for anxiety & sleeplessness is called "Calms Forte".

If you're interested & can't get it there, I could easily send you some, just in an envelope & you could try them. I used to be REALLY dependent on Rivotril. We're talking REALLLLYYY - if I started getting low, I'd get really anxious. I actually carried a prescription around in my purse for 2 years (I had about 7 left) 'just in case'!! Anyway, I found Calms Forte & it worked so well I was able to throw out the pills (I kept 1 just to remind myself how dependent I'd become on them) and also the prescription!

I have found homeopathic remedies good for quite a few things, over the years.

I send ya hugs, Kath
