Cinnamon and BSL - experiences?

Posted by Farkus on January 14, 2007, at 18:28:20

Anybody have any *personal* experiences on use of cinnamon and the regulation of blood sugar levels?

I took about a teaspoon of cinnamon a day for a week. It seemed to improve my mood, but mess up my sleep, so I stopped. Maybe it was a placebo effect.

I have heard that only small amounts (1/8th tsp?) of cinnamon are needed, but would crumble up a cinnamon quill into my rolled oats and stewed apple and almonds and eat the lot.

My doctor asked me to eat less cinnamon, but you find your vices where you can.

~~~ Not too bad a vice as far they can go, I wouldn't have thought.... why was too much a bad thing per your doc? I'm curious....
I was prediabetic with Syndrome X and all the usual stuff. My blood sugar/insulin/cortisol levels were overcorrecting.
After 5 years of my nutritional doctor's recommendations this has largely stopped. Initial BS is still a little too high and is perhaps too rapidly degraded (or whatever the right word is) by insulin. Therefore he suggested reducing the amount of cinnamon I eat.
I'm a bit of a herbal junkie and tend to overdo it. There's a packet of Goji Berries beside me as I speak.
Did you notice any side effects from the large dose of cinnamon?
I guess it's a great antioxidant as well...
Side effects from cinnamon? No.
Just the obvious one about my BS dropping a little too quickly some time after being a little too high.
I really like the taste anyway (and the fact of eating bark).
yeah, i bet i could eat a tablespoon per day...so it reduces insulin levels?
I just saw something on pbs about how reducing insulin is one key way to extend lifespans...apparently insulin is just plain bad for our cells...
"There were also no problems with compliance or problems associated with the consumption of 6 g of cinnamon per day."
Cool.
I have read that you should not take this amount of cinnamon on a daily basis for a long time, because of some other chemical that builds up in your body. The good stuff in cinnamon is water soluable and the bad stuff is oil soluable.
If you want to take it regularly you should use a water-based extract that concentrates the good stuff in cinnamon and omits the oil-soluable stuff in cinnamon. There are probably several brands, but the one that I have used before is CINNULIN. It is quite a bit more expensive than cinnamon, but still not too expensive. It also has the most amazing smell that you can imagine. It has a smell like cinnamon, but so much better.
You can go to http://www.cinnulinpf.com/scientific.html to read lots more about the science of cinnamon and blood sugar.
Your nutritional doctor?
My - that would be nice.
I'm in Ontario, Canada & I'd love to find a nutritional doctor who's covered by OHIP (provincial insurance)
