It's a plant sterol with a chemical structure similar to cholesterol. The most commonly found phytosterols in saw palmetto are beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and cycloartenol
It inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) via the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT is thought to be approximately 30 times more potent than testosterone.
It contributes to male male hairloss, benign prostatic hyperplasia and acne.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta-sitosterol
