Life Extension Foundation website :
"Acetyl-l-carnitine arginate is a patented form of carnitine that stimulates the growth of neurites in the brain. Studies show that acetyl-l-carnitine arginate stimulates the growth of new neurites by an astounding 19.5%, which is almost four times better than acetyl-l-carnitine"
has anyone tried this? Would higher growth of "new neurites" help with depression/bipolar?

Tried it for a short period of time, couple of days. It gave me muscle weakness and mental apathy.
Its only suppose to be good for geriatric depression.

I don't know about the arginate version. Regular acetyl-l-carnitine looks pretty good on paper though. It has all kinds of healthy effects on the brain and heart. It has been shown effective for geriatric depression. In one study at 500mg 3 times a day it was shown to be equal to amisulpride.
I personally could not handle more than 250mg. It definitely gave good physical energy and maybe a slight boost of mood, but also some uncomfortble restlessnes where I just could not relax or stand still. After 3 days I would start to feel more depressed. I've cycled it on and off 3 different times and each time the same pattern happens.
I can see though how ALCAR could be of benefit to a lot of people.

I am taking regular acelty-l-cartitine. I have noticed some mood improvoment, and increase in mental clarity.
It is supposed to go well in combination with alpha-lipoic-acid, which is another supplement I did well with.
The ALS is giving some simulation. I am just taking 250mg in the morning.
