I've had success with fish oil, but was wondering what peoples experiences with other oils like evening primrose etc.

I've tried Flax Seed oil. One study says it helped people with panic disorder and agoraphobia. However doesn't seem to have an effect for me. Also only the one study in 1981 citing that it works so not realiable enough.

There's a product called Lyprinol that contains green lipped mussell oil, and is supposed to be 50 times more potent than EPA. I can't remember what's in it. It is recommended for asthma and arthritis, for which there is experimental evidence apparently. I wonder if it's good for depression. The Mauri people in NZ used those mussels for arthritis.

I've taken Evening Primrose Oil for years for PMS. It works very well for that, but I never noticed a specific antidepressant or anxiolytic effect. People have said that it's much more calming than fish oil and that it can work synergistically with it. Don't take my word for it though. I think that I read it somewhere on this site.

On a bang for the buck basis, borage is the best source. However, EPO probably has something else in it that assists in the relief of PMS. Link, I'm sure you don't have to worry about that bit.
GLA works competitively at a desaturase site, and an elongation site, to the omega-3s. There is a synergism, however, as stalled GLA (i.e. high physiological concentration) promotes the formation of a class of prostaglandins that is anti-inflammatory.
To maximize the effect, I'd take fish oil every day, and the GLA in a one-day blob. A bolus. How often you took the GLA would be fine-tuned on the basis of individual response. I go with once a week GLA. Your body may vary.

> DeclanYes, there is something in this oil that makes it very much more effective against arthritis than other marine oils.....I'm going to go with sterols. It is also possible that these mussels are actually contaminated with "toxins" from phytoplankton, which remain active in the extracted oil. <shrug>
Is it worth the cost? Depends on if it works. It seems to be very effective in both forms of arthritis, osteo- and rheumatoid, for most people. Moderately helpful in asthma.
