mao inhibition---green tea caution?

Posted by mike99 on March 23, 2006, at 12:48:38

I guess this could go on the alternative board, but since it's related to med interactions/mechanisms I thought it would getter better exposure here.

My question is regarding green tea's actions as an maoi (a/b?). Apparently it has some mao inhibitory actions.

Would one need to be cautious about taking high doses of green tea (ie 10-20 cups worth in liquid or other extract form) with meds or foods that are usually contraindicated with maoi's?

Thanks y'all.

I did not know it was a MAO inhibitor. Do you have any literature on that ? I knew it was a COMT inhibitor, which affects the metabolism of norepinephrine and dopamine. I've heard of people combining COMT inhibitors with MAOI's, though I don't know the consensious.

Hey Linkadge,

My mistake...thanks for clearing that up for me. I confused COMT for MAOI. I do not know it to be an MAOI.

Might you happen to know if there any general precautions for COMT's and other drugs such as opiods or stimulants?

I am also wondering if it would be safe to take large doses of green tea w/ provigil since both have dopamine reuptake inhibitory actions (?).

Or a TCA for that matter.

Thanks again.

Mike

That is a very good question, and I would like to hear a good answer. From experience, norepinephrine reuptake interacted with COMT inhibition, but MAO inhibition did not seem to interact with COMT inhibition.

The flavanoid quercetin is a COMT/MAO inhibitor.

I was taking a TCA with green tea and definately noticed advere effects.

Me too.

Interesting. Quercetin is found in apples and certain teas if I'm not mistaken.

I did too after taking a vicodin and green tea.

Yeah, quercetin is in apples, garlic, and olive oil. It comes in greater quentities in supplements though.
