I know the scare of serotonin syndrome.
I see taking tryptophan as increasing serotonin levels, and SSRIs utilizing that serotonin more effectively.
I believe that i do have low serotonin levels, and that my SSRI won't be as effective, if at all.I see it as harmless, as long as i stick to under 1 gram per day, same stuff my horse uses, wink wink.
What do you guys think?
regards,
Brian

> BrianI understand your reasoning. How can the SSRI re-bounce for effective use what's not there to begin with? And if you were getting serotonin from your diet already, then you wouldn't be depressed.
I suspect it's not that simple, however. But you won't know until you try it.
I would suggest you familiarize yourself with the symptoms of serotonin syndrome, and monitor yourself very carefully, and/or ask someone around you to do so for feedback that may be more objective.
I know someone who was on Serzone and Tryptan (tryptophan as prescribed in Canada), who didn't recognize symptoms of serotonin syndrome until his life was very negatively affected.
I felt terrible on SSRIs and not much better on tryptophan alone. I had the same lethargy and tiredness with tryptophan and a terrible stomach ache besides.
Let us know how you go.

I think you are wise to go with tryptophan and stay away from 5htp. I believe in starting low and going slow, including tricks like emptying half a capsule or mixing custom sized doses with fruit juice.
