Want off Klonopin! gaba,niacin,inistol,theanine?

Posted by qbsbrown on September 22, 2005, at 13:11:57

I've almost been on klonopin (1.5 mg daily) for almost one year.
It works well for my anxiety, but i think induces a little depression, makes me tired, and need more as i go along. And i don't want it long term.

What is the most effective weaning process? And what are the most effective supps (please include dosages).
Individually i've done, niacinimide by iteself, gaba by itself, and glutamine by itself. All probably too low of dosages.

suggestions appreciated,

Brian

You wouldn't take glutamine to get off Klonopin though. It's stimulatory. What about magnesium, glycine, taurine, niacinamide, gaba, inosirol, theanine. What about herbs? AN SHEN DING ZHI WAN is a compound standard recipe thingo that is mild, safe and reliable, except you need considerably more than the label says. If you live in or near a city there should be a shop selling this chinese herb stuff. I take it so as not to take more Valium than I do.

The Himalaya Herbals preparation Mentat/MindCare has been shown in studies to mitigate benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms. After reading about this formulation, I am going to abandon ordering herbs from beyond-a-century and try using this. I am very impressed with their product line thusfar.

Prevention by BR-16A of GABA/BZ Receptor Mediated Triazolam withdrawal Reaction in Mice
Kulkarni, S.K., Sharma, D.K. and George, B. Pharmacology Division, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India.
ABSTRACT
Withdrawal from chronic treatment with triazolam (0.1, 0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg) i. p. once daily for 9 days followed by 24 hours withdrawal) produced hyperlocomotion increase in total activity and anxiety response when mice were tested using mini activity meter or on elevated plus-maze, respectively. Concomitant administration of trimazenil [Ro15-1788] (1 mg/kg i.p for 9 days) or BR-16A, a herbal psychotropic preparation (100 mg/kg, po. for 9 days) prevented the development of withdrawal-induced anxiety response. Withdrawal from chronic treatment with triazolam had no significant effect on learning and memory parameters as studied by transfer latency. However, treatment with BR-16A prevented the delay in retrieval observed after chronic use of triazolam.

Note an approx. conversion to human dose for mice is mouse dose * 0.08. Thus, that is 8mg/kg, or a very reasonable dose of Mentat. Give it a try; I believe int he ingredients. Let me know how it goes, I think I'm going to order some.

In my experience, l-theanine, gaba and niacin are all worthless. Maybe it's because I have such a high tolerance to gabaergic substances, tho. I took 2 mgs clonazepam (generic klonopin) and washed it down with a 6-pack everyday for nearly 7 months during one period in my life. One day I decided to stop cold turkey. I remember that at first it wasn't really that bad. It was like awakening from a dream. My senses were so much keener; visually, everything seemed so much more vivid and clearly defined. I had insomnia pretty bad for a while tho. I think the issues that people have with benzodiazepine withdrawal are really more psychological than anything else. I found that marijuana really helped.
As far as inositol goes, the stuff really did have a mood-elevating effect on me. I found myself laughing and joking around a great deal more than I usually do. I don't know how well it would work for benzo withdrawal however. One word of caution tho...if you do decide to take the inositol in high doses, make sure you try it on a weekend or vacation when you're less likely to be around other people...'cause lemme tell ya, while the stuff worked great for me, it gave me the worst gas I have ever had in my entire life! Had it not been for this unfortunate side effect I would still be taking it.
