SAM-E with an MAOI?

Posted by EERRIICC on August 16, 2005, at 23:55:56

Can I take lots of SAM-E (800 -1600) with Parnate?

Do you think think the Chinese have really powerful and expensive forms of gensing that could wipe out depression?

I had a Doctor that told me it was completely Safe to take SAM-E with a MAO. However I read a couple of articles on the web that claimed it was risky ( I look for hours, about these combo )

At the end , I did not try SAM-E with Nardil.

I got serotonin syndrome (serious case) with the combination of SAMe and an SSRI. If you do combine start low, and go very slowly.

As far as ginsing goes, I don't think it really has all that many antidepressant qualities per-se.
Maybe energizing.

I found magnesium augmented my parnate more than anything else. But I ended up getting off of it as it just made my moods dark.

Other's may argue.

Hi Eric

I'd taken 400mg/d SAMe for years and when I started Parnate 10mg/d got an immediate and positive response, which developed into an agitated feeling that went away when I discontinued the SAMe. I'm fairly sure it was seratonin related because...

1. I'd found discontinuing SAMe difficult in the past due to a cold bleak feeling, which was no problem with Parnate 10mg/d in place.

2. I've never had that agitated feeling on deprenyl, bromocriptine, cabergoline, amphetamine.

3. Agitation eventually returned when I added the plant based seratonin analogue, Seroctin, to the Parnate.

Anyway I think the combo stimulated one of the seratonin receptor subtypes responsible for agitation. It wasn't the same anxiety as I'm used to it. I felt a bit freaked out. Since you take a fair bit of Parnate I'd be cautious with the combination.

Was the amineptine/Parnate combo OK?

I've taken different chinese herbs for depression, in herbal formulas made for me. Nothing magic, that's why I'm trying a bit of Parnate. Still, it's all very interesting.

Hi Meri,

>Are you in the UK - whats the general consensus about MAOIs with GPs in the UK?

GPs don't prescribe MAOIs. Only a few pdocs are willing to prescribe them. It's sad - and really quite pathetic.

Hi Ed!
What!??!?!?? Thats terrible. I thought that they are the best line of attack in some cases.....I really am begining to wonder what is good about the UK healthcare system (apart from its free, well sort of).

PS am back in the UK now, and I rather wish I wasn't!

Nah Meri, I'm in Australia. On PB people from the UK complain about the NHS and getting a MAOI. Tom Twilight's on Marplan though. Ed wanted a MAOI at one point.
So you're back from Finland?

Can't say anything about amineptine with parnate except it seemed to be working well until I crushed and snorted 2mg of buprenorphine and began a sweating muscle flexing/twitchin marathon that ended a day later in the ICU with kidney dialysis a serious possibilit due to muscle twitching and flexing. I was all right though and next time I mess about I'll keep propranalol an valium on hand. I'll give the amineptine parnate another shot in the next couple months and let you know how I fair. Right now I'm going to augment with starttara probably (for sleep)and ritalin. I take to me world class MGH god psychiatrist on the 23rd so I'll let you know. The theory at their clinic is that any treatment no matter how risky is better than severe depression and sweet lord in heaven they be tellin' da tooth!

He had to find a private pdoc who would prescribe one - not an easy task!
