Girls, please be careful if you choose to use OTC available items for hormone balance.
I have toyed with some of these things for a few years and for me, they never really panned out BUT they also never really caused a horrible problem either. This time was different. For 4 weeks I did a women’s oil mix with various hormone balancing items – soy, EPO, Flax oil. While there may be other factors, I have had extreme protracted bleeding for the better part of 2 weeks. I actually contacted my GYN today and if going off of this doesn’t make an impact, I will need to be evaluated for a possible D&C.
For the most part, my perimenopausal symptoms are some night sweats and the occasional foul humor prior as PMS. Low dose Klonopin treats this for me, but I wished to stay off of it, so I sought an alternative. Alternative ideas did not work out for me. I think I prefer Klonopin use over what this has seemed to caused.
I’m not knocking it for others and if you are finding success without untoward effect, I think that’s great. I guess my message is: If this is a new thought for a plan for you: Be careful and listen to what you body might be telling you. My plan is to seek conventional guidance and treatments if things get really difficult.
This hasn’t been a good experience for me.

I had a friend that swore by natural progesterone cream and convinced me it would cure all my ail's.
I used it for one year (and I am not near menopause -- I hope anyway), I'm only 27. Anyway, I have often wondered if using that progesterone cream could've been one of the triggers to my anxiety/depression/body whack out. I started having chronic yeast infection (never had ANY prior), panic attacks, anxiety, then went on antidepressents that made me even worse.
I just haven't been the same since.
I've read even progesterone (too much of a good thing, ya know?) can do damage. I wonder if that's what I did to myself.
*SIGH*
Sometimes being a woman just isn't much fun!

I blame myself on a number of levels. I thought I was pretty well informed. The problem I think is I had bought in the idea that this path would be innocuous. At worse, it just would not work. I was not prepped for extreme ill effects. I'm thinking that might be the way a number of folks may see natural alternatives. For me, I have GOT to change my paradigm - whether I'm considering vitamin and mineral usage or supplements - they are Herbal Drugs with implications - good and bad.

Soy alone could caus the prolonged heavy bleeding..flax could possibly exasperate and EPO could make a thicker endometrium causing more blood..
I'd suggest quit all soy at least..and any other isoflavones.. bet you do feel better within a couple of months.
Before any D&C you can check for endometrial thickening with a ultrasound (also endometrium thickening usually does not mean anything worse..its common in hypothyroid..which can be brought on by soy and isoflavones..)
..and also I suspect one can just take a sample of tissue to check for any nasties..similar to a pap smear only in the uterus..but its only my latest gyn that has suggested that one to me.(I think)Yeah progesterone for over a year in doses most take will bring on symptoms a bit like cushings, I've mentioned this b4 somewhere..progesterone excess converts to cortisol? I think..usually takes 12-15 months for buildup in fat of most females..but they do feel good for the first few months! at least that is what I've noticed. Happens in over 90% I'd say. Probably why we naturally cycle it? Also I suspect maybe not rubbing on fatty area?..maybe more the wrist or just above and only a tiny dose?..just a theory
How was th progesterone taken..cream? and if so, where was it applied? or trouches or capsules :-) I'm guessing cream and rubbed on fatty areas?D&C are considered just routine and a small op..and are for most I guess. Hope this helps some anyway.
Wishing you well,
tea (who's had a D&C and was OK that time..but also had many many years of that heavy bleeding which stopped with thyroid meds..not that I'm suggesting thyroid meds..just don't take any isoflavones of any kind that could slow the thyroid function maybe?)

Thanks tealady. I appreciate your input.
Even after 4 days off the oil, things do seem better. Doc said if bleeding slowed and stopped over the next few days I could wait for next cycle and come in to be checked out as along as further difficulties did not arise.
This did not go at all the way I foresaw it.
This is the end of the thread.
