melatonin question

Posted by Green Willow on June 2, 2005, at 22:37:54

I take melatonin. It helps me fall asleep but I am unable to stay asleep. I spend as much time awake as sleeping at night. My mind doesn't race or anything, it is just that I don't shut down to sleep. My question is: Is melatonin supposed to keep you asleep the entire night? Do I need to experiment with a different dose? I take 1 mg. and have experimented with .75 mg.
Thanks, Greenwillow

Have you tried the sustained release form of melatonin? That kept me asleep. I found it too hard to wake up in the morning though.

No, I have not tried that, and am sort of afraid to after hearing it made it difficult for you to wake up!! I did increase to 1.25 mg. and I slept better. GW

I don't know if it's just me and brain chemistry but when I took melatonin it did weird stuff to my brain.

I took it for 2 weeks and woke up in the middle of the night in a panic attack. Then I noticed I was having serious cycling of moods- I would feel wonderful then feel anxious, then feel depressed.

Melatonin thrust me into the same funk/weirdness as SSRI's. I wonder if it messes with seratonin as well??

If you mess with my seratonin, I become weird (okay, weirder than usual, how's that? ha).

Anyway, I mentioned it to my dr. and dr. said, " be careful with that stuff it's a potent hormone."

Who knows??

That is interesting that melatonin affects you so strongly. I haven't really correlated any of my weirdness to melatonin, but maybe there is a connection! I am taking 1.25 mg. and it helps me get to sleep but not stay asleep. I'm a little afraid to try extended release. Guess it couldn't be too expensive to try. Green Willow
