I've been taking Carlson's liquid fish oil at a dosage of 3 teaspoons per day for the last five days. My breath, I think, now has a strange odor to it, a very gross one at that. It's not exactly fishy, it's more like "trashy." Disgusting really. I'm just wondering...is that normal? Is that the kind of halitosis people get when taking large doses of fish oil. Being a neurotic hypochondriac, I also noticed that bad breath is a symptom of mercury toxicity. Could I be getting mercury toxicity from the Carlson's? (I realize that Carlson's is highly rated by most people and has been tested by Consumer Lab blah blah blah, but still...I worry.) Any feedback appreciated.
ThanksChris

~~~Some folks do note fishy burps and breath manners. Switching - I know, it's not fun to have a product at hand and have to switch - to one that is lemon flavored may be of help. You could check the company's return/exchange policy and maybe wouldn't be out in terms of losing funds over this. I believe Carlson products aren't difficult about that.
~~~I wouldn't think that's the case and in particular, given the short period of time. I honestly believe most fish oil preparations are to a standard that isn't harmful. But, that's just what I believe. Also, a factor for me and my anxiety issues is being hyperattentive when starting ANYTHING new. I'm not saying that's the case for you, but it always is for me. Truthfully, fish oil has caused me the least amount of difficulties of any "add ons" I've taken to include vits and minerals. I took it for a year and a half. It's the only one I stayed with consistently over my haul and the one I'm probably going to add back - if for no other reason, it's really good for heart health.

Glydin:
Thanks for the feedback. I probably am being overly attentive. I think I read in one of your other posts that you thought fish oil increased your anxiety level. Is that true? I am kind of starting to feel like I am more anxious, not less, after a week of the Carlson's. My primary symptoms are on the anxiety/panic/OCD side. I have tried Andy Stoll's Omegabrite fish oil product several times in the past with no luck, so now I am giving Carlson's at a higher dose a try. Oh, and I do have the lemon taste Carlson's--the halitosis was coming more like after the ingestion than when I was taking it. The taste of the Carlson's is fine. Anyway, I'll keep trying for a while to see how it goes, but I don't have high hopes.
Thanks again,
Chris

Hey Chris,

~~~I've done FO in various "styles" over time - expensive, not so expensive, Salmon Oil versus mixed sources, high EPA and not so, taking numerous, taking few... basically all types of different ways. What I discovered for me and keep in mind, I get weird reactions to things, is high EPA products (per softgel) did appear to increase my anxiety - which is the opposite of what a number of people report. I also thought FO could have contributed to some myalgia I have, but I've pretty much ruled that out as a causative factor. The only difficulty I have experienced is some problems with skin breakouts that sometimes seems related and other times not. In terms of GI tolerance - it's no problem.
>Oh, and I do have the lemon taste Carlson's--the halitosis was coming more like after the ingestion than when I was taking it.~~~Oh well, blew that theory. I was hoping that might be the problem.
~~~I did not find it to have "WOW" results, but I do think it aided with motivation, drive and energy for me. This could have been a placebo effect, but even so, I'll take it. I am planning to restart soon and see if there is a difference. In the meantime, I think I'm just in a lazy phase. It's not THAT problematic, but I do wish for a little improvement.

I tried a brand called Nordic Naturals that had some lemon added to improve the taste. It seemed to help cut down on fish breath and fish burps, but I didn't think it made much of a difference in my depression.

I bought some enteric coated fish oil once, I don't know how good it is but I didn't get fishy burps when taking it.
