hi all,
this is my first time visiting this board, and i haven't had a chance to search to see if my topic has already been covered. if it has, forgive me for the repetition, and if you could respond anyway, i'd really appreciate it.i'm ready to try acupuncture, but i don't know how to find a good acupuncture practitioner. my insurance actually covers the treatments at 90%, so that's really good. i found several MDs who practice acupuncture, but i don't know if the medical degree makes a difference or not. when i looked up acupuncturists in my area, i found hundreds, so i don't know how to choose. do you think it's better to go with someone who, by ethnicity or background, are more familiar with oriental treatments? are those practitioners harder to communicate with language-wise? do you think that acupuncturists who practice in a group are a better bet than those who practice alone?
as for acupuncture itself, has anyone ever tried it? is it painful? when i looked at the list of medical conditions that it can help, i found a lot that i'm dealing with-- circulation problems, vertigo, lightheadedness, slow digestion, nausea, and pain related to bones and joints. here's another question i'm curious about-- do you have to get undressed to be treated? for these conditions, where would the needles be placed?
if anyone has any experiences, i hope you'll post. i'm nervous about branching out into alternative medicine, but since normal western medicine hasn't helped much, i think it's a reasonable time to try. also, i've been on narcotic painkillers for awhile, and i want to get off them before i become more dependent or even addicted.
thanks!

Hello carebear and welcome to the alternative board,
I've had accupuncture a few times, and would recommend giving it a try. Its not a cure all, but it is helpful for many conditions. Like all medicines or therapies though, not all benefit everyone so its a case of trial and error really to find out what actually makes a difference to how YOU feel.
Its not painful, just a little pin prick thats all and the places the needles will be inserted varies a lot....i've had earlobes, forehead, mouth, hands, ankles etc done. The main thing is to relax, and you'll find more often that not that you almost fall asleep whilst under the needles.
As for finding someone who is good at their profession........well its like most things, word of mouth recommendation works well or try to do a bit of background digging first to find someone who you feel comfortable with and confident in using as this IMO is extremely important when it comes to healing.
What country are you in by the way? It might help someone reading this thread to recommend someone perhaps if they know someone relatively close to you.
Hope this helps
TJ

Hi. I was looking for you guys! I've just had my 4th acupuncture treatment for muscle spasm in my back and shoulder that was very paindful. It is working. Further, the information the practioners hand out claims that acupuncture can help heal "emotional problems" like depression and bipolar disorder. I'm skeptical about the latter, although I wish it were true.
My daughter has had treatments for a pinched nerve that has been succesful and I'm pleased with my results. I want to go off my meds, but I can't afford the twice weekly treatments they suggest that rearanging mental and spiritual energy would apparently require. In fact, I can afford one more session.
I'm at discount--$50. Going fee is $75 and that's in NJ which is expensive.
Herbs and stuff would cost more.
I like their approach.

hey! good to read your post! i just had my first acupuncture appointment today. i was surprised at how it was, though i had no idea what to expect. i went to a teaching institute, so there was a student and a faculty attending overseeing. my treatment is mostly for nausea/vomiting and dizziness, and the first treatment was great. the needles didn't hurt, and i felt sooo relaxed. much better than xanax! i was afraid of being exposed physically, esp since my mom sat in, but they were very good about protecting modesty and giving me a blanket and letting me cover as much as possible with my gown. i'm going 2x a week for awhile and will see how it goes! hope to hear more news from you! cb

I actually just wrote somthing in detail regarding the post about...hum, my memory is failing. Rainy, you posted under it, it was a thread about yoga and such. I was posting under the name 'Poetess' at the time and made another post under my new name. I'll get the link so that you can find it easier.
I did say that I have never tried acupunture, but metioned some other things, as well.
I found a great link on complimentary/ alternative medicine that I put in the first message. Here it is again.
Hope all goes well for you.
