HELP - Could Milk Thistle do this to me?

Posted by saw on September 23, 2004, at 8:00:37

I have been taking milk thistle for about three days now. I am aware of a constant churning in my stomach, a fair amount of nausea and bloating, and my stomach has distended to triple it's size. I can't wear most of my clothes and look like a beached whale.

Is it possible that the milk thistle could be having this effect?

I also picked up this bit of info, does anyone have any insight?

"What other drugs will affect milk thistle?
Milk thistle may inhibit the metabolism of certain drugs. Before taking milk thistle, ask your doctor if any drugs you are taking are metabolized by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. You may not be able to take milk thistle, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring while you are taking it."

I will be away until Monday, but would really appreciate any assistance or advice.

Thank you all
Sabrina

PS. I started taking chromium picolinate (sp?) at the same time as the milk thistle.
PPS. I am on Effexor XR 150mg daily

Yes. Some people do not tolerate milk thistle, and that pattern of reaction is classic. It just isn't right for you.

Thanks Larry, I will stop right away. Is there any other natural supplement that I could take for my liver? There is nothing wrong with it but I do drink a lot. A lot.

Thanks
Sabrina

Glutamine and Taurine - read that these amino acids are required by the liver for detoxification and could even aid weight loss.

Any opinions?

I have an interest in this as an overeater and the supplements I've seen mentioned the most for liver health besides milk thistle are alpha lipoic acid (especially), Vit E and Vit C, all for their antoxidant action boosting glutathione.

I'm not familiar with this guy, but this seems to be a pretty good summary of the prevailing wisdom that I've seen in bits and pieces elsewhere: http://tsangenterprise.com/news59.htm
